Machine House Brewery accepts a long-distance mild challenge

It’s an extension of the brewery’s March Mildness event. Kind of.

A challenge doesn’t sound very mild, but Machine House Brewery has accepted a mildness challenge and is prepared to defend itself. The showdown with the interloping out-of-towners goes down Friday, March 20th, through Sunday, March 22nd. Go to Machine House, drink mild, and defend Seattle’s reputation. There will be swag prizes, and there will be mild. Not just local mild, but mild from far away. Keep an eye on Machine House’s social media for details.

The Background

Beer enthusiasts around Washington are well aware of Machine House Brewing and its prowess at producing outstanding, authentic English-style beers. Real ales, as they call them across the pond. Cask beers, as they’re more familiarly called around here. The brewery’s lineup includes a traditional dark mild, a style of beer that Machine House celebrates this time of year with its annual March Mildness competition.

Apparently, the legend of March Mildness has spread beyond Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. A couple of months ago, a Chicago beer bar reached out to Machine House Brewing and issued a challenge. The Beer Temple is a taproom and bottleshop in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood, not too far from Revolution Brewing, for those of you familiar with beer in the Windy City.

The Players

The Beer Temple is a champion of a different mild competition involving Forest & Main Brewing. Try to follow along. Forest & Main is a brewery in Ambler, Pennsylvania—the “Mild Masters.” They do a mildness showdown, sort of like Machine House does. The Beer Temple has topped that competition.

“Seattle’s reputation is officially on the line,” says Machine House Brewery. “Chicago’s The Beer Temple has challenged us to a long-distance ‘March Mildness’ showdown, and we’ve accepted. We aren’t just playing; we’re playing to win.”

“We are going head-to-head against the reigning champs from Chicago and the “Mild Masters” at Pennsylvania’s Forest & Main. To ensure victory, we’re bringing in a ringer: Tucson’s own March Mildness legend, Ken Provost, for special guest bartending shifts to rally the troops.” (Ken was the owner and bartender extraordinaire at the now-closed, but still legendary, Slow Boat Tavern.)

“A couple months ago, this Chicago bar sent us an invitation to ‘get our butt kicked’ in a long-distance March Mildness 3-day battle,” says Machine House Brewery. “Well, not sure how they do things in Chicago, but we thought that didn’t exactly sound very Mild. And so, we felt compelled to accept the challenge and are now very much compelled to WIN.”
