Earth Week, hand trucks, zero-emissions, and the Latona Pub

“Today begins Latona Earth Week with our first keg walk in over 2 years,” said the post on Instagram last weekend. “For the next week, every keg brought to the Latona will be delivered using zero motors or emissions.”

It’s been an annual tradition at Seattle’s venerable Latona Pub for a long time now, interrupted only by the pandemic. This year it is back. Breweries from across the city deliver kegs to the pub via people power. Most often, that means trekking across the city with a keg on a hand truck. It’s a great way to honor Earth Week.

The whole thing culminates this Saturday, April 23rd when Latona Pub celebrates Earth Week. One day, last weekend, the Latona crew and friends made the big trek across the city, starting at Georgetown Brewing in the Georgetown neighborhood, stopping at breweries along the way to gather kegs, and delivering them to the pub in the Green Lake neighborhood. Quite an impressive journey.

“We’ve spent the week hand trucking kegs alongside our brewer friends and we’ll be celebrating with a benefit for the Washington Brewshed Alliance, a program of Washington Wild that works with craft brewers to protect wildlands and waterways.”

“Every keg on tap will have traveled to the Latona using no motors or emissions! At 7pm, we’ll also have live music from guitarist Leif Totusek and percussionist Ricardo Guilty Blanco.”

Whether you can make it to Saturday’s soiree or not, know that every beer you drink at Latona Pub right now was delivered without the assistance of fossil fuels.
