An Overlooked Gem: Mighty Pine Brewing in Port Angeles

A view of Mighty Pine Brewing from the street

It opened in 2024 and immediately gained steam and earned esteem

The dense population of breweries around the Seattle-Everett-Tacoma metroplex churns out a lot of news, and many of the breweries further afield are not so diligent about sharing their news with me. That is a fact, as reflected in what I publish on the Washington Beer Blog. When a brewery reaches out to me from somewhere beyond the Puget Sound area, as Mighty Pine Brewing did recently, I am eager to hear what they have to say and keen to share the story.

Doug Burghart had no specific news to share, except that he was attending a Yeast Essentials class at White Labs in San Diego. His message prompted me to realize I had failed to extend coverage to the opening of his family’s brewery, Might Pine Brewing, in Port Angeles. And it’s been open since the summer of 2024! Oops! I apologize to the Burgharts and to my entire audience.

Admittedly, I haven’t visited Mighty Pine yet, but the glowing reviews on Google make me feel like I’ve missed a gem. The reviews make me feel like I need to plan a road trip. The brewery and its taproom currently have a 4.9-star rating with 120 reviews. The four reviews that aren’t 5-star are, well, interesting. The other 116, all 5-star reviews, come from locals and beer tourists alike who comment favorably about the vibe, the beer, and the people. (To clarify, 116 of the 120 reviews on Google are 5-star.)

In addition to public praise, Mighty Pine Brewing earned a lovely accolade from the Peninsula Daily News, which named it “Best Brewery and Best Place For A Cold Beer.” At the 2025 Washington Beer Awards, the brewery earned a silver medal for its Irish Red Ale. So yeah, even though it still qualifies as a new brewery, it’s getting noticed. It just has not been mentioned on the Washington Beer Blog. I am remedying the oversight here.

Doug and his wife Amy lived in Bellingham for a long time. That’s where they were they raising their children before uprooting the family and moving to Port Angeles and eventually opening a brewery. Like many breweries, it is a dream born from a simple homebrew kit purchased from a local homebrew supply store. That was 20 years ago.

The Burgharts say they believe the key to a successful and sustainable business is a never-ending pursuit of quality: in the beer they serve, the taproom atmosphere, and the friendly, welcoming service they provide with their team. Building community is one of Mighty Pine’s core values, intentionally designed to create a warm, comfortable, and welcoming space where guests enjoy time with friends and family.

The taplist currently features a variety of beers and styles: a saison, a Czech pilsner, a hazy IPA, a juicy pale ale, an oatmeal stout, and others. Pay the Burgharts a visit, as I hope to do soon.
