Each year at about this time we find out how much beer each brewery in Washington produced during the previous year. I have just received the production totals for 2019. Below, I share the list of Washington’s top 100 breweries based on production volume.
This information is provided by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board. All breweries in Washington are required by law to report, and pay taxes on, how much beer they produce. Below I share information based on those reports for 2019.
Download the complete list in PDF format here. (Note, it may lead you to questions that I can’t answer.)
But first, some notes and observations.
- The list shows the production numbers for each brewery location in the state.
- Some of the breweries on the list, like Fremont Brewing and Elysian Brewing, have multiple production facilities, but combining the numbers from those locations did not change their positioning
- Other breweries with multiple locations, when combined, do change position on the list. Reuben’s Brews, Black Raven Brewing, No-Li Brewhouse, Chuckanut, and Old Stove for instance.
- There are well over 400 breweries in the state.
- Only 11 breweries produced more than 10,000 barrels in 2019.
- Of those 400+ breweries, only 91 produced more than 1,000 barrels in 2019.
- What does that mean? Roughly 75 percent of the state’s breweries are “small breweries.” These days, I think it is fair to refer to breweries producing less than 1,000 barrels annually as small.
- Ranked number 21, Jester and Judge, a cider company in Stevenson, reported making over 5,000 barrels of “beer.” I assume it was seltzer or kombucha, both of which are categorized as beer by the state. Cider is categorized as wine.
- You may notice some anomalies, such as breweries that you’d expect to come in with lower numbers. It’s safe to assume that such unexpected results are because of contract brewing. That is, perhaps they were brewing beer for another brewery, which is not something that is always widely advertised by either party involved.
- Combined, Washington’s breweries produced nearly 700,000 barrels last year (691,453)
- The top three producers saw increases in 2019.
One barrel = 31 gallons.
One barrel = 330 cans (12-oz).
