They say that when one door closes, another one opens. True, but sometimes, when a door closes, it just opens from the other side. This story, arriving on the last day of 2024, speaks to the state of the craft beer industry. The waning year was filled with brewery consolidations, reorganizations, openings, and closings.

Case in point, it’s been no secret that things were coming to a conclusion for Bellingham’s Twin Sisters Brewing. Over a year ago, we learned that the business was for sale. Now we know that, indeed, Twin Sisters Brewing is closing down. That’s not good news, but as that door closes, it opens from the other side for a different Bellingham brewery. Stemma Brewing announced today its plan to move into the space.

“We are beyond excited to announce that Stemma is expanding into a second taproom and brewing space in early 2025,” said Stemma Brewing’s announcement. “We’re pumped to bring a new Stemma gathering place and more Stemma beer to the Sunnyland neighborhood with this spacious brewery, taproom, and beer garden.”

The Twin Sisters facility is very large compared to Stemma’s current location. In fact, it’s large by just about any measure. The property comprises over 11,000 square feet of custom-designed building space, including a large restaurant, taproom, and event space. The 34,000-square-foot lot includes buildings, a large beer garden with outdoor dining space, and over 40 dedicated parking spots.

“We have so many visions, ideas, and dreams of what may come with this expansion, and will share more as they come to life,” Stemma’s announcement continued. “Make sure to follow along to stay up to date on all the news and look for a Grand Opening date in the coming months. With this, we are also hiring for a Manager of Taproom Operations. This is a new role as we grow and this position will be an integral part of our small family business.” Follow Stemma Brewing on Instagram to stay updated and to learn more about the job opportunity.

As for Twin Sisters Brewing, they also made an announcement today. “As 2024 comes to a close, we want to take a minute to reflect on not only this last year, but the last 6 years Twin Sisters has been a part of the amazing Sunnyland neighborhood. We’ve thrown some awesome parties, crafted tons of quality beers, served up some delicious meals, supported local charities, and did our best to do it all with a smile.”

“Unfortunately, it is now the time for our story to end. We want to thank everyone who walked through our doors over the years. You helped make Twin Sisters what it was.”
