Join now and get access to a couple of very special beers

pFriem Family Brewers, one of our revered blog sponsors, just announced a special deal. If you join the pFriemsters Union before June 23rd, you get access to a couple of exclusive beers. One is a barrel-aged barleywine created in collaboration with Breakside Brewery and the other is double milk stout aged with a very rare Japanese oak.

About a year ago, pFriem Family Brewers began shipping direct to consumers in Washington. As we reported, this means Washington residents have easy access to some of the Oregon brewery’s rare and ultra-creative treats, like barrel-aged beers, mixed fermentation beers, fruited sours, and so on. Stuff not often found on the shelves of beer retailers. Stuff often reserved for members of the pFriemsters Union. Washington residents can join the bottle club and enjoy pFriem Family Brewers’ rarest treats delivered directly to their door.

The current special offer involves two special beers. One is a collaboration with Breakside Brewery: a specially blended, barrel-aged barleywine—a riff on bananas foster. The other is a Mizunara oak double milk stout. Mizunara oak is a rare Japanese wood widely sought after for its aromatic qualities and revered for its use in aging Japanese whiskey. Learn more about both of the beers from the descriptions below, provided by pFriem Family Brewers.

pFriem + Breakside Barrel Aged Bananas Foster Black Barleywine

11.2% ABV, 45 IBU
pFriem + Breakside Barrel Aged Bananas Foster Black Barleywine is a long discussed, finally realized dream collaboration between the barrel departments of our two breweries. Inspired by the classic dessert, bananas foster, we selected a barrel aged imperial stout and a bourbon barrel barleywine from pFriem’s barrel stash, and blended it with choice barleywine and milk stout barrels chosen from Breakside’s cask selection. This decadent elixir was then finished on ripe caramelized bananas, whole vanilla beans and toasted cinnamon.

Japanese Mizunara Oak Aged Whisky Stout

10.8% ABV, 42 IBU
A rich and silken double milk stout inspired by the elegant refinement of Japanese whisky. This dark and deep sipper exhibits aromas of sandalwood, coconut and spice, through aging on Japanese whisky infused mizunara oak.

Mizunara oak, a rare Japanese wood, gained prominence for aging whiskey due to limited import options post-WWII, and is now globally sought after for its unique aromatic qualities. Aging with Mizunara imparts distinctive flavors of sandalwood, coconut, and subtle spice, sometimes described as temple incense, setting it apart from American or European oak. While more commonly used in Japanese whiskey production, its use in beer can lend similar nuanced woody and slightly exotic notes, adding complexity beyond traditional oak aging.
