A new brewery opened a couple weeks ago on the western edge of Astoria, Oregon’s downtown business district: Obelisk Beer Company. The plan is to focus on artisanal beers with intriguing ingredients and flavors. Beers that cannot be rushed. The company’s motto is “Slow Beer, Good Times.” The faces behind the brewery are two Fort George Brewery alums, Nathan Lampson and Dave Coyne (pictured above, from Instagram).
Lampson moved to Astoria a decade ago and redirected his career to craft beer, working in design, business development, and most recently as the sales and marketing director for Fort George Brewery. Coyne landed in Astoria nine years ago and has filled many roles at Fort George Brewery, including over six years doing R&D/special projects/barrel management.
Obelisk Beer Company’s name is, in part, a nod to the Astoria Column, an obelisk-like monument to the Pacific Northwest. Also, Lampson and Coyne like to say they’re building a monument to beer.
For more than a year, Obelisk Beer Company has worked to refurbish the building at the corner of 6th and Bond streets. The 72-year-old structure was built as a Blitz-Weinhard beer distribution warehouse, so there’s beer history.

“There are remnants of beer math from orders scrawled on the walls, and a few old Blitz stubby bottles scattered around the basement,” Obelisk Brewing said on Instagram. “More recently, the building was home to Columbia Fruit and Produce for 3 generations as a family-owned business serving the greater Astoria area. This lineage makes us real happy.”
The taproom at Obelisk Beer Company does not plan to offer food, but you’re welcome to bring it with you. They’re looking to create a warm, family-friendly vibe at the 49-seat taproom.
