New brewery coming to Spokane this summer: Uprise Brewing

A brewery coming to Kendall Yards this summer.

West Central Spokane is poised to get a brand new brewery and restaurant this summer. Uprise Brewing is currently under construction with no firm opening date set, but all the pieces are in place as the project moves forward.

The new brewery and restaurant at the corner of North Ash Street and West College Avenue is part of the larger Kendall Yards development. Uprise Brewing’s 6,500 square foot facility will include a ten-barrel brewing system and an all-ages taproom with seating for more than 175 guests. Along with a play area for the kids and a large, dog-friendly patio the business will include five Airbnb studio apartments. All of this is just steps away from the Centennial Trail.

Uprise Brewing secured the services of Riley Elmer to brew the beer. Spokane beer lovers might recognize the name; Riley was the assistant brewer at Perry Street Brewing across town.

The ownership team at Uprise Brewing consists of three Spokane natives. Jonathan Sweatt owns three other businesses in the area: The Flying Goat, Downriver Grill, and Republic Pi restaurants. At Uprise Brewing he is joined by brothers Brandon and Ryan Hare.

“Our mission at Uprise is not only to produce the highest quality food and beer, but also to create a space where everyone feels welcome and can come together around the table to eat, drink, play, and live,” says Brandon Hare. “The word Uprise means ‘to stand up’ or ‘to come into view.’ Uprise is a verb, it is an action. We want to actively do our part to positively impact our community and city.”

The three owners say they’re excited to see the plan come to fruition, especially as the opening date comes into view. “Seeing the construction of the building coming together has been surreal,” says Ryan Hare. “Brandon and I have been planning on opening a brewery for over seven years now. We had been working for Jonathan as managers at The Flying Goat (Brandon) and Republic Pi (Ryan), so when the opportunity presented itself to partner with him, we already knew we would make a great team.”

According to that team, you should expect to enjoy a wide variety of beer styles with a focus on hop-forward IPAs and crisp lagers at Uprise Brewing. “Having Riley come on board as our brewer makes this whole thing work.” adds Ryan. “Riley’s creativity and passion really set him apart. We are all counting down the days until we can start brewing on-site, and cannot wait to finally open up this space for Spokane.”

As mentioned, the Uprising Brewing is located in Spokane’s West Central neighborhood, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, dating back to the 1880s. Kendall Yards is a 78-acre development on the north banks of the Spokane River. It is a fairly new, still-progressing, mixed-use urban community in the city’s West Central Neighborhood. Historically, Kendall Yards was a large railroad yard, operated by the North Pacific and Milwaukee Railroad, then later by the Union Pacific Railroad. The project to develop a reimagined Kendall Yards has been coming together for the past 20 years.

Kendall Yards is described as a modern neighborhood in a former rail yard, with panoramic river views and hip spots for brunch, cocktails, and pizza. An art walk on and around the paved Centennial Trail takes in striking murals and sculptures, while Olmsted Brothers Green has a play area and picnic shelter. In summer, the Kendall Yards Night Market features live music, food trucks, and stalls selling produce and gourmet snacks.
