Herbert (Bert) Grant - The legend.
Herbert (Bert) Grant - The legend.

Herbert (Bert) Grant was nothing if not original. The founder of Grant’s Ale moved to Yakima, Washington almost 30 years ago and single handedly created the vibrant craft beer culture that we all enjoy today. Well, that is probably what he would have told you. He was a character, for sure, and is a true brewing legend. In his honor, members of the Washington Brewers Guild have been brewing a special beer each year — Herbert’s Legendary Cask Fest Ale, which is brewed exclusively for the annual Washington Cask Beer Festival.

Just to be clear, the name of the beer is Herbert’s Legendary Cask Fest Ale. It is also known as “Herbert’s'” or “The Herbert’s.”

Essentially, a bunch of brewers get together and work as a team to produce the annual offering, adding their own unique perspective to the original recipe. Each year’s version of Herbert’s Legendary Cask Fest Ale takes on a life of its own, displaying the character of the brewhouse in which it was made and the brewers who were involved. Always different yet always the same, it never fails to be an inspirational tribute to the man.

Serious Washington beer geeks wait anxiously to sample Herbert’s at the Cask Fest each year. It is a ritualistic celebration of spring’s arrival.
