One of Seattle’s newest breweries, Counterbalance Brewing Company opened a few weeks ago in Georgetown. They did so rather quietly and unless you were paying attention to the company’s Facebook page, you might have missed it. Today we received the official announcement.
We’ve yet to make it down to the corner of Michigan Street and 5th Avenue, but we will do that soon and provide a followup. In the meantime, here is the press release we received today, complete with details about where the brewery is located, when the tasting room is open, and how bar owners can inquire about wholesale beer.
Seattle, WA (February 2015)–Counterbalance Brewing Company launches wholesale distribution and opens its taproom at 503B South Michigan Street in South Seattle.
Counterbalance Brewing Company, owned and operated by Jeff Howell and Frank Lawrence, officially opened its taproom doors and launched wholesale distribution February 4, 2015. Counterbalance is self-distributing its core lineup of ales to bars and restaurants in Seattle and Western Washington, with packaged beer to follow later in 2015. Counterbalance’s core beers are flavor-forward yet accessible and well balanced, made for a wide range of palates.
The modern industrial-styled Counterbalance taproom is an inviting addition to the Georgetown neighborhood with 14-foot ceilings, handmade tables and bar, and a full view of the 10-barrel brewery. It offers beers by the glass, growler fills and kegs-to-go of Counterbalance beers including Abigale Blonde Ale, Counterbalance IPA, Bad Wolf Dark Ale, and Kushetka Imperial Stout, along with plenty of experiments, prototypes, and specialties on the way. Outside food is encouraged and food trucks will be hosted some days. Service animals (no pets, sorry) and kids are allowed in the taproom.
Head Brewer Frank Lawrence has been brewing a variety of ales and lagers for nearly a decade and started thinking about going pro when friends’ demand for his beers outgrew his homebrewing capacity. A coworker, fellow beer nerd, and bad influence, Jeff Howell, encouraged him to do it and signed on as co-owner and Operations Manager.
The Counterbalance name has many referents. It nods to the balanced formulation of the beers, the complementary professional skill sets of the two owner-operators, as well as the Queen Anne neighborhood in which they worked together previously. The one-legged duck just showed up one day and wouldn’t leave, as these things are wont to do.
