A beer brewed for Uncle Bubba, to benefit ALS research.

Bubba’s Brew, the annual ALS fundraising beer from Bale Breaker Brewing, drops on July 16th. Preorder it now via the website. At first, it will be available at the brewery and via the online store. It will then hit the streets and see wider distribution in the coming weeks. The brewery is also offering a way for customers to be part of a brew day at Bale Breaker (details at bottom of post).

Normally, the brewery would mark the release with a big, foot-stompin’, barn burnin’ party, but for the second year in a row, the release is a bit different. Next year.

Bubba’s Brew is an homage to a beloved member of the Bale Breaker family who lost his battle with ALS in 2020. Scott Bubba Hanses was the uncle of Bale Breaker’s co-owners, Kevin Smith and Meghann Quinn.

The beer is brewed in his honor and now in his memory. Last year, the beer was canned for the first time. This year’s version of Bubba’s Brew clocks in at 7% ABV and 55 IBU.

Uncle Bubba.

The beer and its release party are part of the larger Ales for ALS project that sees breweries across the nation use a specially blended hop in their own fundraising beers. That project, and the special hop blend, is spearheaded by Loftus Ranches, one of the Yakima Valley’s leading hop farms. Loftus Ranches is owned by Kevin and Meghann’s family. So, yeah, Bubba’s Brew and Ales for ALS is a family thing.

To date, the Ales for ALS project has earned nearly $3.5 million for the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS-TDI). Each year, Loftus Ranches and Yakima Chief Hops donate a unique blend of new and exciting hops to breweries across the country, with the ask being a donation to ALS-TDI of at least $1 per pint brewed.

“Just like he inspired our Ales for ALS campaign to raise millions in the fight against ALS, our uncle Bubba continues to inspire us to brew beers in his honor,” says Kevin. This year’s can reflects Bubba’s warmth and famous smile – and his love of the UW Huskies.

Bale Breaker Brewing is donating $1 from every can it sells, and every pint it pours, to ALS-TDI.
