New beer releases mark Big Time Brewing’s anniversary, with a release event this Friday.
Initiation, matriculation, graduation, repeat. It’s an ongoing cycle at any university and it’s a part of the enduring rhythm that keeps Big Time Brewery and Alehouse vital and relevant. Seattle’s original brewpub, located on University Avenue, just a block from the University of Washington’s main campus, is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary.
You are invited to help celebrate the milestone by stopping in to enjoy Big Time’s Old Wooly Barleywine, which the brewery releases each year on December 1st. The official release is at noon. Available on draft and in bottles to go. Also, the brewery has already released its 35th Anniversary Beer, a winter ale brewed in collaboration with Ladd and Lass Brewing. Stop by Friday, or anytime soon, and thank the crew at the Big Time for all they’ve done to keep Seattle’s original and oldest brewpub vital and relevant.
Over the years, Big Time Brewing (the brewery and pub) has reinvented itself a few times. Like the venerable institution across the street, the Big Time endures but at the same time always changes. Music, clothing, and beer styles change, but the institution does not. Initiation, matriculation, graduation, repeat. Not too many years ago, one of those changes involved the introduction of a new owner, which provided a burst of energy that propelled Big Time Brewing into the future.

Rick McLaughlin, who worked for years as a bartender at the Big Time, now calls the brewery and pub his own. The beers, created under the watchful eye of his brother, Head Brewer Roy McLaughlin, taste modern and fresh, belying the brewery’s age. The familiar confines of the pub came out of the pandemic looking better than ever, too: remodeled, spruced up, and sporting a new streetery out front.
In addition to owning and managing the Big Time, Rick is a fierce advocate for small businesses in Seattle. As corporate influencers continue to gain traction with our city leaders, we need more people like Rick who are willing to stand up for the rights and needs of small, independent businesses.
So here we are in 2023 and the 35-year-old Big Time Brewery and Alehouse invites you to celebrate the marking of another year. This Friday, December 1st the brewery releases its annual batch of Old Wooly Barleywine, as it has done on December 1st for many, many years. They’ll serve it on draft and offer it in bottles to go. (A great gift idea for the beer lover in your life.) Along with that, they’ll also offer some food specials.
But wait! There’s more! To commemorate the anniversary, Big Time Brewery also released a special anniversary beer: Winter Flurries Warm Fuzzies. It was brewed in collaboration with Ladd and Lass Brewing, which is just a few blocks away — the new kids on the block, literally. This winter ale is built on a robust collection of malts and three different varieties of hops, as the official description below explains.
“Winter Flurries Warm Fuzzies — 7.8% abv 60 IBU’s- A collaboration brewed with our great friends Ladd and Lass Brewing! This winter ale will warm you to the bone while fulfilling your taste buds desires. An extensive malt bill with Pale, Vienna, Munich, Aromatic Munich, Caramel 40, 75, 120, and a touch of Roasted. Then hopped with Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial. It’s piney, citrusy, and spicy. It’s the beer we have been wanting to brew for 35 years. A huge thank you to Ladd and Lass for their friendship and for brewing this amazing beer with us at Big Time Brewery. On tap at both of our locations today! Come get a pint and fill a growler to go.”
