Even if you don’t want to bowl, your support is needed

UPDATE NOV 7th: We may still have a lane available for you. Email seattleturkeybowl@gmail.com and ask. Otherwise, just come have fun.

For more than two decades, Kim and I have operated the Beer Church Turkey Bowl, an annual fundraiser for West Seattle Food Bank. But this isn’t about us. It’s about supporting your local food bank and similar organizations. Working in collaboration with Georgetown Brewing, we are releasing Beer Church IPA to benefit the food bank, but this isn’t about the beer. It’s about supporting your local food bank. The vast majority of you will not attend our event or drink the beer, so this is a request that you support your local food bank however you can.

turkey bowl fun.

This year’s Turkey Bowl takes place on Saturday, November 15th at West Seattle Bowl, at 5:30. Beyond this event, wherever you live, it’s important to support your local food bank right now. Maybe, it’s more important than ever.

Turkey Bowl

Whether you bowl or not, the public is welcome to attend the Beer Church Turkey Bowl event. It’s a big party, basically. This year, like last year, we organized Turkey Bowl with increasing assistance from our family, giving the event fresh eyes and younger energy. At the time of publication, there were a couple lanes still available for bowlers (sign up here, if available).

We encourage everyone to come and check out the event, even if you don’t bowl. In addition to a raffle/auction, the event serves as the official launch event for this year’s Beer Church IPA, a beer brewed by Georgetown Brewing to benefit West Seattle Food Bank. Read about that below. Along with regular people like you, many members of the local beer industry attend the event.

Right Now, Perhaps, More Than Ever

This year, we want to focus on the bigger picture: food insecurity across the nation. With the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) set to expire on November 1st, about 42 million Americans who rely on SNAP will face a new level of need. That is equal to 12% of the population of the U.S. Families with children represent 62% of SNAP participants, and over 37% are families with older adults or disabled household members.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand the how this will impact local food banks and other assistance organizations across the entire nation. The administration says it will find a way to fund the program, but there are no guarantees and it is clear that SNAP is not a priority. It’s a faceless bargaining chip in an inhumane game of political tug-o-war. The only guarantee is that funding for SNAP expires on November 1st.

About the Beer

A glass of beer in a brewery, in front of stainless steel equipment

Beer Church IPA was brewed by Georgetown Brewing in collaboration with Beer Church and West Seattle Food Bank. It’s a non-hazy, West Coast IPA featuring Simcoe, Mosaic, Krush, and Nectaron hops. It’s designed to be a full-flavored IPA that weighs in at a modest 6% ABV. Early tastings describe it as offering flavors of pineapple, orange, and stone fruit. I encourage you to evaluate it yourself. It will be on tap at West Seattle Bowl for Turkey Bowl and also at Georgetown Brewing’s taproom in Seattle.

Over the years, many breweries have supported the efforts of Beer Church and Turkey Bowl. Last year we brewed the Beer Church beer with Elliott Bay Brewing, the very first local brewery to get involved in Turkey Bowl all those many years ago. Georgetown Brewing was another early supporter. This year, we are grateful that the brewery shares our passion for supporting the community and we thank them for stepping up to brew Beer Church IPA to benefit West Seattle Food Bank.

Proceeds from the sale of Beer Church IPA benefit West Seattle Food Bank. All you need to do is drink the beer to support the cause, but we encourage you to do more and step up for your local food bank wherever you live. You’ll find a directory of Washington’s food banks here.
