Bale Breaker Brewing Introduces a New Style: Yakima Pale Ale

Field 41 is now a YPA

The announcement from Bale Breaker Brewing said, “That’s right, we’re dubbing a brand new beer category: Yakima Pale Ale!” What defines the YPA style? Apparently it is a pale ale that is low ABV and low calories, with plenty of Yakima-grown hop character.

The beer you’ve long known as Field 41 Pale Ale is now Field 41 Yakima Pale Ale. Along with the name change, the brewery updated the recipe a bit.  “Field 41 Yakima Pale Ale is a crisp, hoppy pale ale with a lower ABV (4.2%) and just over 100 calories, to keep it light and crushable without reducing the hop aroma IPA lovers want in a classic pale.”

The new version of Field 41 is significantly lower in alcohol content. A full 1.0% lower. I don’t know the caloric content of the original Field 41, but presumably the new version is lower. At 100 calories per 12-oz can, it’s damned near a diet beer.

“Not only is Field 41 true to our brewery’s roots (it’s named after the @loftusranches hop field our brewery is built on!) – now we’re taking it a step further by taking our longtime classic pale and making it true to the roots of our community as a whole: the Yakima Valley, where we supply nearly 75% of the world’s hops.”

“The backbone of our company is this community, and we figured a style of beer SHOULD be named after the incredible place we call home, bringing attention to just how much Yakima brings to the global beer world. So cheers to a refresh on our longtime favorite, and a double cheers to our family and community roots!”

Field 41 YPA is available at the Bale Breaker Brewing taproom in Yakima right now. You’ll find it at the company’s taproom in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood starting on Friday, August 1st. Before too long, you’ll find it on shelves at your favorite beer retailers across the company’s distribution network.
