R-Day returns to Seattle on Saturday, September 16th

R-Day is a big party on the streets of Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood. Beer, music, and general merriment serve to celebrate the city’s most iconic beer brand, Rainier Beer. Though the beer is now brewed elsewhere, the big red R is still associated with Seattle.

The R-Day celebration kicks off at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16th. It’s a free event but you gotta be 21+ to attend. Rainier-themed costumes are optional. Don’t be frightened by any wild Rainiers that might be roaming the streets.

“Wonderful and weird” is how Rainier describes it. I just call it wacky fun. The first R-Day took place ten years ago to celebrate the return of the big red R to the Seattle skyline, atop the building that once served as Rainier’s brewery. R-Day takes place a bit farther south on Airport Way, in Georgetown, where Rainier Beer was born back in the 1800s.

More about R-Day on Rainier Beer’s website. Here is the official announcement with all the details.

R-Day 2023 is sure to be a particularly exuberant and eclectic fair, as it marks the ten year anniversary of the first R-Day and the moment when Rainier Beer’s iconic “R” was rightfully restored to its place atop the Old Rainier Brewery in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle.

In keeping up with this milestone, Rainier has wrangled a full cast of beloved Rainier characters to attend R-Day, led by a herd of Wild Rainiers, which will unveil a slew of Rainier oddities and attractions.

Accompanying all the seasonal Rainier merriment will be some exceptional musical talent, including beloved PNW hard rock faves Red Fang co-headlining with the West Coast guitar grooves of Cherry Glazerr, and the region’s pre-eminent R&B beat master and vocal powerhouse, Parisalexa. KEXP’s afternoon groove anchor Larry Mizell Jr. will man the decks.

The historic and fabled legacy of Rainier Beer runs deep in Seattle as it was first introduced way back in 1878 and has persevered through the prohibition era to its modern-day revered status. In the early 2000s, Seattle lost the iconic red “R” atop Rainier’s former brewery, much to the dismay of local residents, but the “R” was eventually resurrected in 2013, and R-Day was born.

Ten years later R-Day continues to attract thousands of loyal diehard fans each year, many of whom pay tribute to the brand by adorning their wackiest Rainier costumes. Today, the iconic “R” remains a beacon over the city, and the R-Day celebration is a clarion call for the drinkers that want to honor it.
