Big Al Brewering Releases Time Capsule Brett IPA

Whenever I think of a time capsule, I think of a cartoon frog singing, “Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime doll…” It’s an indelible memory etched deep into my psyche from an old Warner Bros Loony Tunes cartoon. A classic. But, this is about a different kind of time capsule. Big Al Brewing’s Time Capsule Wild Ale series of beers.

The concept is simple, really. Make a beer, put it in a barrel, stash it away somewhere, forget about it, and wait for some mustachioed construction worker to dig it up 100 years in the future. Well, kind of, but not really. On Friday night at the Beveridge Place Pub, Big Al Brewing releases a beer from its Time Capsule Wild Ale Series: Time Capsule Brett IPA. It also goes on tap at The Beer Junction on Monday and Brouwer’s Cafe on Tuesday. Three chances for you to check out this funky IPA brewed with 100-percent brettanomyces. You can also get it at the Big Al Brewing tasting room.

big-alThe brewery describes the beer: “Time Capsule Brett IPA is fermented only with Brettanomyces. Earthy funk combines with sweet tropical fruit to make up a complex, enticing aroma. The flavor is sweet, juicy pineapple and mango, with a tart funky finish complemented by the spicy hop character and lingering bitterness of a top flight India Pale Ale. This beer is a testament to the versatility of Brettanomyces and the myriad of delicious flavors it can produce.”

Malt: Pale, Crystal 40, Wheat and Munich.
Hops: Nugget, Cascade, Fuggle, and Glacier.
Yeast: WLP644 Brettanomyces bruxellensis Trois.

I’m still thinking about the frog. Because of my affection for that cartoon, and because I like giving things nicknames, I’m going to call this beer Ragtime Doll IPA. And I’m very much looking forward to drinking it.
