It just wouldn’t be Washington Beer Week without a new brewery opening. Today,
Friday, June 19, a new brewery and taproom opens in Gig Harbor: Wet Coast Brewing.

Bryan Copeland and Aaron Johnson, along with their wives Molly and April, own and operate Wet Coast Brewing. Bryan and Aaron both work for West Pierce Fire and Rescue. They’ve been planning the brewery for a long time, but have been working in earnest on the project since 2012.

wet_coast_signWet Coast Brewing will operate a 3.5 barrel brewing system. The taproom will be open Friday thru Sunday. According to the website, “Wet Coast Brewing Company won’t be the largest brewery you’ve seen, we’re fine with that. Before prohibition, America was serviced by thousands of local, small-batch, breweries dedicated to delivering the freshest, highest quality, beer possible. That is exactly what we’re going to do, all while giving our patrons a beer experience we hope they”

Also according to the web site, the brewery’s name is a reference to the Pacific Northwest’s reputation during Prohibition. When most of the nation was “dry,” the Northwest was known as the “wet” coast, likely because of its proximity to Canada and the prolific bootlegging trade our waterways fostered.
