Watts Brewing introduces Hive Mind Pale Ale, a collaboration beer brewed with one of the brewery’s nearby neighbors, Woodinville Cut Shop. Designed to resemble an IPA, but with lower ABV and more restrained bitterness, Hive Mind Pale Ale packs a hoppy punch.
“Hive Mind is an American pale ale brewed in collaboration with our friends down the street at the Woodinville Cut Shop,” explains the release announcement. “If you haven’t been to the Cut Shop (and I know many of you have), it’s one of Woodinville’s favorite hangouts, both because of the great beer, excellent food, and immaculate vibes. They were looking for a hop-forward beer to add to their lineup that pops like a West Coast IPA but with a more restrained ABV and bitterness.”
“We put our heads together and came up with a hoppy pale ale recipe built around Eureka hops. Eureka is an often-overlooked hop from Hopsteiner in Yakima, with some really cool, dark fruit notes. Paired here with Mosaic and Comet, we get a meteoric ride from tangerine to apricot to plum to black currant to pine.”
For those who don’t know, there is a bee theme to much of what Watts Brewing does. In part, this is because they think pollinators are important and cool, but also because the Watts family has a long history in the bee industry. The family bee business has been around for over 50 years.
“The name Hive Mind has several layers to it. From the start, the connection to our bee theme is obvious, but the name also refers to the collaborative development of this recipe, and how we hope it’s the kind of beer that brings people together. It’s also a subtle nod to retro sci-fi that fits with the Cut Shop’s throwback vibes.”
