Just in time for summer, Seattle’s most authentic Bavarian-style beer hall announced yesterday the scheduled opening of its beer garden. Located on Capitol Hill near Seattle University, Von Trapp’s sprawls luxuriously across 10,000 square-feet of interior space. (See our original post about Von Trapp’s.) On Thursday, June 12, the party continues outside in the new biergarten. (Note – the opening of the beer garden may be delayed slightly, but lunch service certainly starts on June 12. Keep an eye on the Facebook page.)
I love drinking al fresco. I dig beer gardens. I know this is Seattle, and the weather is what it is, but I wish more establishments offered outdoor beer drinking options. The biergarten at Von Traps features a pavilion-style canopy, its own bar, seating for as many as 80 additional beer-drinking butts, a bocce court, and outdoor televisions.

Von Trapp’s also announced extended hours. Starting on the 12th, the restaurant opens at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. As expected, Chef Pete Fjosne devised a delicious-sounding menu for the new lunch service.
Here is the press release with more information.
Von Trapp’s Biergarten
Outdoor Bocce, Just In Time For Summer
SEATTLE, June 4, 2014— What goes together better than beer and sunshine? That’s right: nothing. Von Trapp’s is thrilled to announce the opening of their biergarten, where beer and sun come together in a truly perfect union. The parking lot to the north of the building has been converted into a fantastic outdoor seating area complete with a pavilion-style canopy, full bar, and a bocce court. It’s expected to open on Thursday, June 12, just in time for the World Cup.
There’s seating for 60 outside at long biergarten-style tables, with an additional 20 seats available on the convertible bocce court. The bar, with eight beer taps, has six more seats. There are additional restrooms accessible from outside, as well as outdoor TVs.
The summer brings new hours at Von Trapp’s: the restaurant will now open at 11am Monday through Saturday, and at 10am Sunday. There will be a new lunch menu available Monday through Saturday from 11am to 5pm, with dinner beginning every day at 5pm. Happy Hour will now be from 4pm to 6pm on weekdays; 3pm to 5pm on weekends. The biergarten closes daily at 10pm, though the restaurant will remain open later.
Chef Pete Fjosne has put together a stellar new lunch menu, here’s a peek at a few of the new items:
- Kasekreiner, a foot long lightly smoked pork sausage made with Emmental cheese, garlic, onion, and black pepper
- Sauerbraten Sandwich with marinated and braised beef brisket and red cabbage coleslaw, served on a house made pretzel bun
- Donor Kebab or Aji Chicken Kebab with either grilled chicken or lamb and beef seasoned with mint and rosemary, served with tzatziki, romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and red onion on a house made pretzel pita (Yes! All the salty goodness of a pretzel combined with a fluffy pita pocket.)
- German Potato Salad with celery, red onion, bacon, fresh horseradish, dill, paprika, and a mustard seed dressing
The earlier hours in the restaurant apply for events as well—the main space and the mezzanines are available to rent for lunch meetings or other daytime events. The biergarten will be available for private parties as well—contact Molly Pluger, events coordinator, at events@vontrapps.com for more information.
Opened in February of 2013 Von Trapp’s is Capitol Hill’s very own 10,000 square-foot slice of Bavaria. Owners Deming Maclise and James Weimann filled the renovated 1940’s candy factory with burly bier hall antiques from across Europe to create a genuine feel and an outstanding space. Authentic Bavarian fare—house-made sausages and pretzels—are accompanied by 24 drafts featuring both European and Northwestern beers. In addition to the main dining room, an 80-seat bier hall, 53 bar seats, an intimate fire den, and two mezzanines encircle the five indoor bocce ball courts.
Von Trapp’s is open Monday through Saturday at 11am, and Sundays at 10am for brunch. Dinner is served from 5pm to 11pm, and a late night menu is offered from 11pm to 1am. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm and weekends from 3pm to 5pm. Bocce ball courts are available to rent by the hour and in conjunction with event space rentals.
