Release event in Bellingham on May 19th

Otherlands Beer of Bellingham, Washington, teamed up with a group of local breweries to create a beer to benefit refugee resettlement organizations here in the Pacific Northwest: The New Colossus, an 11° Czech-style pilsner. The collaboration lineup included some serious heavy hitters: Cloudburst Brewing, Gold Dot Beer, Holy Mountain Brewing, and Wayfinder Beer. They’ll release the beer at a fundraiser event at Otherlands Beer on Monday, May 19th. The brewery will donate 100 percent of the sales of The New Colossus to World Relief Western Washington and Global Refuge.

As the brewery’s name suggests, Otherlands Beer recognizes the value that people arriving in the USA from other lands add to the fabric of our American culture. This beer takes its name from the poem enshrined at the base of the Statue of Liberty, The New Colossus, by Emma Lazarus. (Back in 2020, I introduced Otherlands Beer here on the blog; that story explains the brewery’s international roots.)

“Monday May 19th we’ll be releasing the first batch of our collaborative fundraiser beer The New Colossus,” said Otherlands Beer on social media. “Taking its name from the Emma Lazarus Poem that adorns the base of The Statue of Liberty, this project aims to raise money and support for refugee resettlement organizations @worldreliefwesternwa and @globalrefuge_.”

“Just here in Washington state there are hundreds of folks from Afghanistan, Ukraine, and other spots who have been resettled with the help of these groups. The recent slashing of funds and political pressure on refugee resettlement programs has made the task of assisting and welcoming refugees very difficult and calls our communities into action.”

“We’ll be releasing “The New Colossus” from 5-9pm here at Otherlands Beer. 100% of the sales from every drop of this beer, both here and at the participating breweries and bars, is being donated to the above organizations. All tips and food sales at the release party will be donated.”

“In partnership with the folks at World Relief we’re also collecting items for “welcome kits” for newly arrived refugees to help them settle into a new life here in the USA (more details on this soon.)”

“We hope you’ll join us on Monday May 19th to help raise money and defend the very American tradition of welcoming new folks to this country. Drink a beer. Donate. Get Involved. Call your damn representatives and demand they fight to restore funding to refugee resettlement programs!”
