It happened quietly about a month ago, while many local beer enthusiasts were preparing for Seattle Beer Week and the impending torrent of beer events looming on the horizon. Sumerian Brewing opened in Woodinville. For you, oh beer-drinking reader, I know it is easy to miss each and every one of these, but for the Washington Beer Blog, reporting on new brewery openings is a core competency and we offer no excuse.
Still, when a tree falls in the woods, or a brewery opens in Woodinville, it does indeed make a sound whether we are there to hear it or not. Sumerian Brewing Company opened in Woodinville about a month ago. The location is not far from Redhook, in a business park off of Highway 202.
A native of Woodinville, Tyson Schiffner worked in the brewery at Redhook, which is where the saccharomyces cerevisiae (beer yeast) first found its way under his fingernails. After spending time in the cellar and then the brewhouse, he landed a job across the street at Chateau Ste. Michelle winery. Eventually he scored a gig at Betz Family Winery, one of Washington’s most-esteemed wine producers, but beer was still in his heart. Now he’s back in the brewhouse working as the brewer at Sumerian Brewing.
Sumerian Brewing is owned by Mark and Holly Ihrig, a husband and wife team: she recently retired from a career at Microsoft and he is an entrepreneur who launched, among other ventures, The Micro Beer Club in 1995—a mail-order beer program.
Sumerian Brewing Grand Opening
The official Grand Opening is scheduled for June 27th at noon. Woodinville’s Mayor, Bernie Talmas will be there for the official ribbon cutting ceremony, along with council and chamber members.
At Sumerian Brewing you’ll find a 21+ tasting room, with outdoor seating. It looks spacious and lovely, though I confess I’ve not yet been there. No food, but keep an eye on Facebook for food truck opportunities. Currently on tap: Whiskey Stout, Lucidity Pilsner, Sumerian ISA, Sumerian Stout, and Narcissism IPA.

Their ISA is KILLER…one of the best I’ve had. Worth dropping on for that.
Thank you for the post and for your comments. They are warmly appreciated.
Any idea that the story behind the name is? I was hoping to see some ‘recipe from ancient Sumer’ beers or some such.
