It is one of the most painful ways to lose a loved one. When someone about whom you care takes their own life, the emotional trauma can seem impossible to navigate. But you are not alone. Suds Against Suicide proves that point. Anyone impacted by suicide is welcome. The event takes place in Yakima on Saturday, September 14th. The purpose is to raise funds for the Washington State Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and also promote a sense of community. Among other things, the event includes the tapping of a special beer for the cause, brewed by Iron Horse Brewery. See the press release below for all the details.
An event and a beer to help support suicide prevention efforts.
The Chainsaw Cat, a bar and live music venue in Yakima hosts the second-annual Suds Against Suicide on Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. The event is a fundraiser for the Washington State Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The Chainsaw Cat is located at 509 W. Yakima Ave Yakima, WA.
Suds Against Suicide will feature the tapping of a special beer called Rando, a light American lager that Iron Horse Brewery created specifically for this event and to help raise funds. The event will also feature a tattoo flash marathon from Cyclops Tattoo from noon until 7:00 P.M. Eazy Eats food truck will offer food for purchase. A raffle will raise funds for AFSP. Tempest, a Yakima-based rock band, will reunite to provide live entertainment from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.
“This event came about from trying to figure out a way to positively process my own pain due to the loss of my father to suicide,” says Jason Graham, formerly the owner of The Beer Shoppe in Yakima. “I want others in the same situation to know that they are not alone in this struggle. That there is a community of people that can come together and offer support.”
On August 21, 2005, Jason’s father, Randy Graham, took his own life and left a wife, son, daughter-in-law, grandson and other family members behind. After many years of carrying the weight of the loss of his father, Jason had an idea to brew a beer that could help bring people together and raise funds to support suicide prevention.
After Jason shared conversations with Chad Roberts, a local beer industry veteran, the idea for Rando was born. The two decided to organize an event during National Suicide Prevention Week in September of 2023, the first-ever Suds Against Suicide event. The event showcased the new beer and united the community.
Instead of focusing on just one group of individuals impacted by suicide, Suds Against Suicide is an all-inclusive event welcoming any person touched by suicide. Abiel Hoff and Traci Burnes, the owners of The Chainsaw Cat, agreed to host the event. Pablo at Cyclops Tattoo agreed to offer tattoos all day.
Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the second annual Suds Against Suicide on September 14, 2024, from 5:00 until 9:00. The event is free to attend, and children are welcome before 9:00.
