The Olympia-based producer of N-A beers introduces a collaboration beer: an oatmeal cream IPA
Self Care just announced that it is accepting orders for Hasta La Raíz, an Oatmeal Cream IPA, with shipping starting the first week of September. Literally, the Spanish term Hasta La Raíz translates as “to the root.” Figuratively, it refers to a person remembering and holding onto their foundation as they grow and change. The concepts of home, family, and experiences provide our roots as we grow, blossom, and expand our identity. As for the beer bearing the name, it was brewed in collaboration with Oregon’s Crosby Hop Farm.
To create the new beer, Self Care says it blended two of its most popular base malts with a generous amount of oats, complemented by a small addition of wheat and just enough lactose to balance the haze. As for the hops, Hasta La Raíz features hops from Crosby Hop Farm, including Crosby CGX (cryogenic hop pellets) and Crosby Crystal, along with a bold dry-hop addition of Azacca.
The brewery describes the result as a vibrant sensory experience of luscious citrus notes, a gentle earthy funk, and a satisfyingly fluffy mouthfeel that comes together for an awesome beer in the N-A space. You can pre-order Hast La Raíz Oat Cream IPA here. The brewery will donate a portion of proceeds from the beer to Freedom for Immigrants (FFI).
The term Hasta La Raíz was popularized in a song by Natalia Lafourcade. The video has 550 million views on YouTube. Beyond that, Hasta La Raíz is a nationwide movement that sees breweries and other beverage producers uniting to create beers to support Freedom for Immigrants (FFI), an organization that envisions a world without prisons or cages.
“Hasta La Raíz is a nationwide beer and beverage collaboration uniting breweries in support of Freedom for Immigrants, an abolitionist organization committed to ending immigration detention and promoting dignity, freedom, and human rights,” said the announcement from Self Care. “We are honored to partner with Crosby Hop Farm on this collaboration. Driven by excitement for both the style and the purpose behind the beer, we set out to craft something uniquely memorable. Our concept embraced modern brewing techniques to enhance mouthfeel and showcase vivid hop character.”
