City Fruit is a Seattle area non-profit that takes the fruit that grows in people’s yards and uses it to feed the community. A lot of fruit in Seattle goes to waste every year, left to rot on the ground or discarded as yard waste, but City Fruit works to harvest that fruit to help people facing food insecurity. That’s a super-simple way to put it, but that’s the basic idea. City Fruit’s work continues throughout the year, not just at harvest time.

Each year Seattle Cider Company teams up with City Fruit to release an annual cider collaboration. It’s a way for Seattle Cider to help promote City Fruit’s good work. This year the cider gets released on August 1st at the Seattle Cider Taproom, available on tap and in bottles (limited supply). The cider will also be available online.

There are more details about the cider, City Fruit, and Seattle Cider Company in the press release below.

City Fruit’s dedication to harvesting and providing year-round care to hundreds of fruit trees throughout the city, alongside their partnerships with over 30 food banks and meal programs, continues to increase the accessibility of fresh fruit for food insecure community members across Seattle. “Both Seattle Cider Co and City Fruit strongly prioritize programs that help our local community. Today, we are proud to partner with City Fruit again to provide a cider that advances the non-profit’s mission to support equitable access to healthy local food,” said Maura Harman, Marketing Manager for Seattle Cider Company. “We look forward to another fruitful partnership and the opportunity to spread awareness for City Fruit’s many important programs.”

The partnership with Seattle Cider Co’s and City Fruit started in 2014 when City Fruit initiated deliveries of apples, unsuitable for food banks, at the SODO cidery in an effort to eliminate waste from their yearly harvest. By 2015, through the partnership, Seattle Cider successfully “upcycled” these apples into a cider, enhancing City Fruit’s harvest viability from 68% to 98%, utilizing crab apples and apples unsuitable for donation. Over the years, Seattle Cider has crafted and launched eight previous City Fruit Ciders, each distinct, and each vintage made from more than 40 apple varieties harvested in Seattle.
