It’s pretty cool how Bartell Drugs embraces and supports the craft beer culture. The fact that they fill growlers at three of the Seattle-area stores is quite remarkable. (At least, there are three I know of.) A drug store that fills growlers? Makes sense to me!
Schooner Exact Brewing produced a special beer to celebrate Bartell Drugs’ 125th anniversary. Boxcar Hopper pays homage to the fact that George Bartell hopped on a boxcar back in Kansas City and ended up in Seattle, where he eventually started his first pharmacy 125 years ago.
Four generations later, brothers Hugh and Neal Barber, Bartell’s great grandsons, have hopped on the opportunity to have their family company partner with Schooner Exact in this celebration of pride for the pioneering spirit of Washington’s independent craft brewers.
About the Beer
Boxcar Hopper is a rye bourbon barrel aged strong ale that was brewed and bottled to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of Bartell Drugs. It clocks in at 8.75% ABV.
Boxcar Hopper is available in 22 oz. bottles at all Bartell Drugs retail locations and at the Schooner Exact taproom in SoDo.
Fremont Brewing has also done a commemorative beer for Bartell’s 125th Anniversary, called Spring Elixir
