From Jefferson Head to the Tacoma Narrows, from Alki Point to Agate Pass, every inch of Puget Sound has been charted, mapped and surveyed for well over 100 years. However, submarine exploration is a comparatively recent development and there are still mysteries beneath the surface of Puget Sound.

In recent decades, something has become clear to divers and scientists: there are big, scary sharks in the murky depths of Puget Sound. I am talking about the ominous bluntnose sixgill shark. It’s got big, dead eyes and a gaping jaw with big gnarly teeth. Some are up to 18 feet long.

Anyone want to go swimming? Ya, I thought not. Let’s go get a beer instead. Soon we will be able to grab a brew at a new beer joint bearing the name of this menacing creature of the deep. The Sixgill is a new beer-focused bar and restaurant coming to Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood.

This is not breaking news, but it is getting more and more relevant as opening day nears. Geoff Kaiser broke the story last year on Seattle Beer News (read it). Recently, our friends at Eater Seattle have been talking about it (read it). Knowing that we all reach different audiences, I wanted to share the news with you here.

The same people who operate The Noble Fir in Ballard are staged to bring you The Sixgill. Ellen Kelly and Rick Weersing’s new spot will be significantly larger than the Noble Fir. There will be room for 36 taps, which will include 30 beers and six ciders.

They will serve food at The Sixgill. In fact, they snatched up one of Tom Douglas’ acolytes to run the kitchen. Eric Stover is a former Brave Horse Tavern cook who also worked at Lola and Dahlia Lounge. Actually, he worked with chef Brian Walczyk to open Brave Horse Tavern. Stover told Eater Seattle, “What we’re looking to do [at The Sixgill] is write the menu for food really around what we’re going to put on tap.”

Whereas The Noble Fir offers resources for climbing and hiking, The Sixgill will offer resources for paddling and boating.

No word on an opening date yet, but you can keep track of how things are coming along by following The Sixgill Facebook page.

I should mention that, by all accounts, bluntnose sixgill sharks seem to have no interest in eating people. But, by all accounts, they certainly could. Also, they can grow up to 18 feet, but most are a manageable 7 to 12 feet.
