Lucky Envelope Brewing introduces some seasonal beers this month. We list them below. Seasonal releases are nothing new for Lucky Envelope, but this month’s lineup includes a tmavé pivo, a very uncommon, historic beer that originated in Europe about 500 years ago. Tmavé Pivo Czech-Style Dark Lager is currently available on tap and in cans at Lucky Envelope Brewing’s taproom.

When most people think of Czech-style beer, they think of pilsner. Tmavé pivo is sometimes referred to as the Czech Republic’s other beer, and it is very much not pilsner. The shortest version, tmavé pivo is a dark, Czech-style lager with roots dating back 500 years. Literally, tmavé pivo means “dark beer” in Czech. Expect a beer that is nearly or totally black and has a rich, robust malt body.

Comparing it to something more familiar, Tmavé Pivo resembles a Munich-style dunkel, but often features a richer body and typically is brewed using a more robust lineup of malted barley—often utilizing five or more different types of barley. Tmavé pivo is brewed to pretty much any strength. The version Lucky Envelope and its collaborators created is a modest 5.2 percent ABV.

In creating this beer, Lucky Envelope collaborated with partners from near and far: Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing of San Antonio, Texas; renowned Czech beer expert and journalist Evan Rail; Seattle’s own Bottleworks; and Annie Johnson, a local brewer and recognized beer expert.
