Out of no fault of its own, and no fault of the beer-loving public, Headless Mumby Brewing has shut down its brewery and is closing its taproom as soon as the beer is gone. We’ve been told that fruitless negotiations with the property owner precipitated this unfortunate situation. The hope is to reopen in a suitable location but thus far they’ve had no luck finding the right spot. We will keep you informed if that changes.

According to an announcement yesterday on Instagram, it now appears that this Friday, August 2nd will be the final day. “We’re down to four beers left on tap. Join us on Friday, August 2nd to hang with some OG’s here. Keith, Alex, Stacey, and Shawn will all be in house to laugh and maybe cry over some delicious lager beer.”

From last week: “It’s a fact that puppies are really cute, I’ll bet my bottom dollar on it” said Alex Maffeo, owner of Headless Mumby Brewing in Olympia, WA. When pressed for further comment he became visibly agitated and stormed from the room. He returned moments later and declared that the brewery was finished. “The market has changed, people aren’t coming out like they used to” he whined. “We’ve been forced to move and it’s just not fair! We can’t find a new spot and there’s no money and it’s so much work so I quit!” He then ran from the room in tears.

There you have it folks: broken dreams and a loss of jobs. Even if we landed a the perfect location the business would likely flounder in the next few years. Times have changed- people no longer go out and spend like they did, ingredient prices have gone up 80% since we opened, our rent more than doubled. It’s just not tenable anymore. I’ve spoken with several other local business owners over the last few months and it’s not looking good for many of them. If you want small independent businesses to survive you have to show up.

We have enough beer on hand to keep the taproom open until the 1st it looks like. We’ll keep you posted as the supply dwindles. It’s been a great time, thank you for all of the memories.
