More than a decade ago, when Georgia Pacific shut down its pulp mill on the Bellingham waterfront, people wondered what would become of the acres and acres of suddenly vacant land. Today, the city is still slowly but purposefully making decisions about developing the 74-acre parcel of prime real estate.

Kulshan Brewing just announced that it is part of one of the first steps towards actually doing something with all of that beautiful waterfront real estate. The brewery will open a “pop-up, container brewery,” part of a shipping container village on the site of the former mill. More specifically, it’s a long the Pump Track – an urban mountain bike track that was constructed on the site in 2019.

Urban, industrial, transformation begins.

The company’s third location in Bellingham, Kulshan Brewing’s Trackside Brewery and Beer garden will offer 24,000 square feet of outdoor beer-drinking space. It will be a seasonal affair. Open during the warmer months only. No grand opening date announced yet, but soon.

Trackside will offer a large grassy area for lounging, picnic tables, yard games, a stage for live music, all with a view of the Pump Track, downtown Bellingham and the surrounding waterfront. Kids will be welcome at Kulshan’s Trackside Brewery and Beer Garden.

Along with a massive beer garden that is literally half the size of a football field, Kulshan Brewing will operate a one-barrel pilot brewery at the location, primarily for research and development. And of course, lots of delicious Kulshan beers on tap.

The opening date is TBD so keep your eyes glued to Kulshan’s social media channels for updates. We will update you here on the Washington Beer Blog too. In the meantime, watch out for Kulshan’s release of Pump Track Pale — a bright, American pale ale brewed to celebrate the opening of the new space, available in mid-June.
