Keg walkin’ for Earth Day at the Latona Pub. Kicks off this Saturday

“We live in a unique place where world-class beer is merely a walk away.” — Latona Pub.

It’s become an annual tradition, with a history dating back more than 10 years. To celebrate Earth Day, kegs of beer are delivered to Seattle’s Latona Pub by non-motorized, human power. In other words, people will walk across the city with kegs on hand trucks. It’s a symbolic gesture, that’s true, but it is a very nice way of drawing attention to the impact that our motorized world has on the environment.

More than that, Latona Pub celebrates Earth Week by hosting events — fundraising for local organizations dedicated to supporting the health and preservation of our watershed and waterways.

The first keg walk happens on Saturday, April 15th. A group of walkers will start in the Georgetown neighborhood and walk across the city, kegs in tow, and end up at Latona Pub in the Green Lake neighborhood. They’ll stop at five breweries along the way to pick up kegs. There will be subsequent keg walks starting in other neighborhoods on the 17th and 18th. See the poster below.

Starting on Wednesday, April 19th Latona Pub will host fundraiser events to commemorate Earth Week. Wednesday, they’ll host a benefit for Save Our Wild Salmon, featuring an auction and live bluegrass music. The finale, on Saturday, April 22nd, is an event to benefit Washington Wild’s Brewshed Alliance with an auction and live music.

Latona Pub is located at 6423 Latona Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115.

The announcement from Latona Pub says, “Protection of the watershed is part of a healthy ecosystem and the Brewshed Alliance, an important program of Washington Wild, has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the link between water quality and beer. The health of salmon is of great concern to everyone, and the Save Our Wild Salmon organization has been dedicated to supporting the efforts to protect the watershed. We are excited to support these two amazing groups during our Earth Week events.”

“For a week, all the kegs delivered to the Latona will have been delivered by non-motorized means. Though the actual reduced impact on the environment is small the symbolism of these walks is great. Kegs have been delivered by bicycle from as far away as Bellingham, by sailboat from Anacortes, and with hand trucks from all over Seattle. There will be three walks this year starting with a walk from Georgetown on the 15th with stops at participating breweries along the way. On the 17th will be the University District walk and on the 18th the Greenwood Walk. On the 20th we will also be hosting a 4/20 event with a special menu from Chef Brian to celebrate this 1-billion-dollar Washington crop, the 5th largest in the State.”

The walks will be followed by two fundraising events at the Latona. On Wednesday, the 18th there will be a celebration of Save our Wild Salmon with a live auction and bluegrass music starting at 7pm. On Earth Day itself, Saturday the 22nd we have our finale with a fundraising event for The Brewshed Alliance. All the beer hand-trucked to the Latona will be on tap and we will have a live auction with music starting at 7pm.

“The neighborhood pub has long been a gathering place for neighbors to discuss an array of topics. The Latona Pub is a perfect place to reflect on Earth Day. Raise a pint with our brewer friends and help support these amazing organizations.”
