Formerly known as experimental hop D55, this variety now has a name

Segal Ranch, a third-generation hop farm in Washington’s Yakima Valley, is recognized for innovative hop breeding and sustainable farming. Over the years, this family-run ranch developed some standout varieties, including Tangier, Anchovy, and Zumo. Now, Segal Ranch unveils its latest breakthrough: Ramosa™.

This new hop is named after Martin Ramos, a driving force behind Segal Ranch’s hop breeding program for 30 years. Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing dubs Martin “The Hop Whisperer.” Ramosa™ bursts with aromas and flavors of pineapple, mango, and fresh-cut melon. Tree House Brewing—famous for its IPAs—jumped on board early, working with Segal Ranch during Ramosa’s experimental phase. The brewery’s praise is featured in the press release below.

Segal Ranch offers Ramosa™ directly, along with partners Hollingbery and Son, NY Hop Guild, and Charles Faram in the UK and Canada.

Here is the press release introducing Ramosa.

Segal Ranch Announces Ramosa
New Hop Variety Honors Veteran Breeder Martin Ramos

Yakima Valley, WA — March 10, 2026 — Segal Ranch is proud to announce the release of its newest hop variety, Ramosa™, named in honor of longtime hop breeder Martin Ramos, the innovative mind behind the Segal Ranch hop breeding program and the originator of the Tangier hop. The name Ramosa™ is also derived from Latin and Spanish roots, meaning ‘branch’ or ‘full of branches,’ a nod to both the hop’s genetic lineage and its expressive, branching aroma profile.

For 30 years, Ramos has been a driving force in hop development at Segal Ranch. Widely respected throughout the brewing community, he is known as “the Hop Whisperer,” a nickname given to him by Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing Company.

Ramosa™ has undergone limited trial use with select brewery partners, yielding highly positive feedback. Alex Cordeiro, Beer Production Manager at Tree House Brewing Company, shared  his experience working with Ramosa:

“Ramosa™, formerly known as D55, is a hop variety we were eager to work with after first encountering it in whole-cone form at Segal Ranch in 2025. At the time, it immediately stood out with an aroma reminiscent of vibrant pineapple juice.

Now used in pellet form, Ramosa™ retains that same juicy pineapple character, complemented  by equally expressive notes of mango smoothie and background notes of freshly cut melon.”

Ramosa™ will be available directly through Segal Ranch, as well as through Hollingbery and Son,  NY Hop Guild, and—through international partners—Charles Faram in the UK and Canada.
