This isn’t the first time Hellbent Brewing has worked on a beer with Boon Boona Coffee. Last year the two businesses were part of a collaborative effort that created Say It Loud: Stout and Proud (read about it). Well, they’re at it again. On February 25th Hellbent Brewing releases a new version of its popular Moon Tower Stout with Owemba Coffee from Boon Boona.
Boon Boona is not your typical coffee roaster. They focus entirely on African beans, forging sustainable relationships with African producers and exporters, with a focus on supporting woman-owned growers. They also share a portion of their profits directly with the growers, with the intention of helping develop the African coffee industry.
“When our production team wanted to add coffee to our customer-favorite Moon Tower Stout, we instantly thought of our friends and previous collaborators at Boon Boona Coffee,” said a press release from Hellbent Brewing. “Boon Boona hosted a coffee tasting, giving many options and concentrations, and the team settled on the versatile Owemba highlighting its sweet chocolate characteristics in cold extraction applications.”
The collaboration team included Hellbent’s Brian Young (Head Brewer/Owner) and Dani Dutro (Customer Experience Coordinator). They worked directly with Boon Boona’s Efrem Fesaha (CEO/Founder), Ali Güldüren (Director of Coffee), and Alex Carlson (Lead Roaster and home brewer) to find the perfect coffee to add to our stout.
About the Beer
From the press release, “Moon Tower already has notes of mild roasted coffee and toasted caramel, and the addition of Boon Boona’s Owemba coffee enhances these while adding a rich chocolate finish to our medium-bodied, dry, smooth, year-round stout making it the perfect “breakfast beer”/anytime stout.”
