Ghostfish Brewing and Odell Brewing, a first-of-its-kind collaboration

Gluten-free breweries are far and few between, filling a necessary and growing niche in the vast, diverse beer bazaar. Regular breweries do what they do; meanwhile, gluten-free breweries are over there doing something that is often considered completely different. That’s what makes this collaboration project so uncommon. (Above, the Ghostfish-Odell collaboration team.)

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time a brewery of Odell Brewing’s stature, type, and reputation has collaborated with a dedicated gluten-free brewery like Ghostfish Brewing. The resulting limited-edition beer, Seduced by Fun Hazy IPA, releases today at the Ghostfish Brewing taproom, available on draft and in 16-ounce cans.

Seduced By Fun Hazy IPA was inspired by a love of fruited ales. In addition to generous amounts of Strata, Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops, the recipe included additions of strawberry and mango. Brewed with gluten-free grains, it clocks in at 5.9 percent ABV and boasts aromas of strawberry and citrus.

An Uncommon Collaboration

Based in Fort Collins, Colorado, Odell Brewing is one of the nation’s oldest craft breweries, dating back to 1989. It is in the top 20 in terms of production volume and its beers are distributed to 20 states. It is one of the largest craft beer producers in the nation.

Comparatively, Seattle’s Ghostfish Brewing is quite small, but its reputation for creating award-winning, innovative beers using gluten-free grains is immense. That’s what attracted Odell Brewing to pursue the project. The Colorado-based brewery developed an interest in gluten-free beer and knew that Ghostfish Brewing was the leader in that space. If Odell Brewing is looking to learn about brewing really good gluten-free beers, working with Ghostfish Brewing is a great place to start.

The two breweries began discussing the project back in early 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic put everything on hold. “We anticipated a mid-2020 release, but the COVID-19  pandemic presented insurmountable obstacles to brew together,” explains Ghostfish Brewing Co-Founder/Co-Owner Brian Thiel. “Fortunately, both sides held on to a deep intention to see this project come to fruition.”

“Our gluten-free brewing journey began in 2018, and the excitement for an opportunity to learn and collaborate with Ghostfish was a no-brainer,” explains Odell Brewing Plant Manager, GF  Brewer Matt Bailey. “Although we weren’t able to brew this beer in 2020 or 2021, we were extremely excited to make this collaboration beer finally happen.”

“We have a great deal of respect for Ghostfish and the high-quality gluten-free beer they always produce,” adds Bailey. “Everyone at Ghostfish is hands down genuinely good people, who are dedicated to their craft and so open to new ideas,  having fun, and making great beer for all. We hope everyone has as much fun enjoying this beer  as we did making it.”

According to Ghostfish Brewing’s Head Brewer, Reid Ackerman, “These projects are always a great opportunity to engage in that cross-pollination of ideas and techniques that occurs once we come together to either create new and more interesting beers or tweak and refine processes that carry over into our greater respective core brands and/or future brewing catalog. This experience with Odell was certainly no exception to this, as well as being a blast to brew together.”

Brian Thiel adds, “For our brewing team to have the opportunity to work side-by-side and learn from a brewery with the experience and prestige such as Odell Brewing is quite an amazing opportunity. Collaborations are cool and fun, but the exchange of knowledge that occurs during these events is priceless.”

Seduced By Fun Hazy IPA is now available on draft and in 4-packs of 16-ounce cans at Ghostfish  Brewing’s Seattle-based taproom. It will soon find its way, in both canned and draft formats, to Colorado.
