Bellingham is one of the Northwest’s premier beer destinations, home to 15 craft breweries. The annual April Brews Day festival is the city’s original and largest celebration of craft beer. Not just Bellingham-brewed beers, but beers from breweries across the region.

Not only is it one of the biggest beer festivals in the state, but it is also one of the longest-running, dating back to 2001. That is when Max Higbee Center realized a need for funding and came up with the idea of organizing Bellingham’s first craft beer festival. To help make it happen, the organization partnered with the city’s only brewery, Boundary Bay Brewery. Since then, the event has grown, just as the craft beer scene in Bellingham has grown.

For years, the event took place right across the street from Boundary Bay’s location on Railroad Avenue, but now April Brews Day has moved down the street to the city’s newly reinvented waterfront, at Waypoint Park. This is the same location where Kulshan Brewing operates its seasonal beer garden during the summer, but April Brews Day takes over the whole thing.

We are proud to have April Brews Day as a sponsor of the Washington Beer Blog and are happy to help them promote this great event. Proceeds from April Brews Day benefit Max Higbee Center, a grassroots organization founded by educators and families of people with developmental disabilities who wanted quality recreation opportunities in Whatcom County. Max Higbee, a professor at Western Washington University, spearheaded the movement. The Drop-In Center gained status as a non-profit organization in 1984. That is when the center was named to honor its founder.
