Ravenna Brewing Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

Join Ravenna Brewing on Saturday, May 30th, for an all-day anniversary celebration. Along with live music and plenty of beer, they’re having a pig roast.

From the Brewhouse to the Barnyard

This is one of those full-circle things. Brewing beer doesn’t just feed people; it feeds pigs. The most voluminous byproduct of the brewing process is spent grain. Think of it as used barley. It’s kind of like used coffee grounds: making a second pot with them isn’t ideal. The spent grain still has some nutritional value, but it is no longer suitable for making beer. However, it is still usable for feeding livestock, like the pigs at Hogstead Family Farm.

A typical craft brewery produces thousands of pounds of spent grain each week. To dispose of it, many breweries partner with local farmers and ranchers. Seattle’s Ravenna Brewing Company enjoys such a relationship with Hogstead Family Farm in Marysville.

“Every Friday, all year long, longtime friend of Ravenna Brewing and owner of Hogstead Family Farm, Luke, drives down from Marysville to pick up spent grain to feed his pigs,” explains the brewery. “Every summer, Ravenna hosts Luke and his crew for an ultimate Pig Roast. They attach a smoker to their truck and drive it down to the patio, where [the pork] is shredded and served, as fresh as can be, complete with sides, BBQ sauce, and pickles.”

Guests get to enjoy the pork alongside the beer that helped feed the pigs, and the circle is complete.

A 10-Year and a 15-Year Anniversary BBQ Bash

“When we realized that Ravenna is turning 10 years old this year and Hogstead Farms is turning 15, we decided that the only fitting thing to do is to throw the most epic pig roast to ever exist,” said the event announcement. “So, we present to you, valued community members and friends: The Ravenna Brewing 10 Year and Hogstead Farms 15 Year ULTIMATE BIRTHDAY PIG ROAST!”

“Whether you’ve been with us from the start or are a new member of the family, we are so deeply grateful for your support as we’ve grown and blossomed in this partnership and in these wonderful communities.”
