Single Hill Brewing Celebrates 8 Years With a Party and An Anniversary Beer

Looking for an excuse to go to Yakima this weekend and enjoy some of the city’s world-class beer? Look no further: Single Hill Brewing is turning eight years old and they are having a party at the brewery’s taproom in Yakima. (The company also operates a satellite taproom in Seattle, btw.)

EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY IPA
The Single Hill Brewing anniversary beer is a West Coast IPA featuring Centennial, Strata, Chinook, Simcoe, Citra, Riwaka, and Mosaic hops. It’s described as a celebration of eight years of brewing, eight years of community, and a cheers to the next eight years.

ANNIVERSARY PARTY!
Saturday, June 6th, All day
“We are turning 8, so obviously we are throwing a party, making some special beers and inviting all of you! June 6th, All Day, starting with a Jazz Brunch in the morning! Lots of food all day and we are capping it off with a Back to Back DJ set from PREZ + CEZAR to party into the night.”

Yakima, where hops are born and raised

Have you ever wondered about the origin of the name Single Hill Brewing? It comes from the lengthy and challenging process of hop breeding. This journey begins in a laboratory and eventually moves outdoors. In the final stages of developing a new hop variety, the grower, also known as the hop breeder, plants an experimental rhizome in a single mound, referred to as a “single hill.”

If the hop performs well, it may be designated its own row the following year, with more rows added in subsequent years. If it demonstrates agronomically viable characteristics—such as yield per acre and disease resistance—and offers desirable aroma and flavor profiles, it could eventually be recognized as a new hop variety with a name you might be familiar with. That single hill is a crucial step in the hop breeding process.

Yakima’s hop farmers produce about 75% of the nation’s annual hop crop, which makes it fitting for a Yakima brewery to have a hop-inspired name. However, Single Hill Brewing’s relationship with hops goes even deeper. Zach Turner, one of the founders and owners, previously worked in hop quality at Yakima Chief Hops, one of the world’s leading hop suppliers, making him quite the hop expert.

“Yakima’s farms make it a truly amazing place to brew beer,” Zach stated when the brewery opened eight years ago. “We aim to transform the flavors of the valley—hops and fruit—into outstanding beers that will delight both newcomers to craft beer and create a destination for top brewers who come to Yakima during the hop harvest.”
