Double Mountain beers and ciders now in cans for the first time

A colorful can of beer getting cracked open

People often consider the aluminum can the most eco-friendly option for beer packaging. True, to an extent, but if you study this stuff obsessively, you know that the refillable bottle is even more sustainable. When Matt Swihart opened Double Mountain Brewery in Hood River, Oregon, he set out to create an environmentally responsible business, including packaging his beer in refillable glass bottles rather than single-use bottles or cans.

For many consumers, repatriating the glass bottles with the brewery is a big ask. Yes, mechanisms are in place to facilitate the process, but still. People mean well, but still. That said, for the first time, Double Mountain Brewery and Cidery is offering its products in aluminum cans, and not just reusable bottles.

Cans of beer in a cooler.

“For the first time ever, Hop Lion IPA, Dry Cider, and a brand-new Czech-style Pilsner are hitting shelves in 12-oz six-packs of shiny, lightweight, adventure-ready recyclable aluminum cans,” said the announcement from Double Mountain. “Hop Lion and Dry Cider drop this Friday, January 30th, at all Double Mountain locations and local grocery stores, and our Pilsner will be rolling out in March.”

“If this feels like a big deal, that’s because it is. We spent more than a decade saying “not yet” to cans while we focused on refillable glass bottles; something we still believe in deeply and will absolutely keep doing. Refillables are part of our DNA and always will be.”

“But… we’ve also been listening. And wow, have you been asking. Cans just make sense for real life; river days, trailheads, concerts, picnics, backpacks, bike baskets, you name it. So here we are, excited (and honestly pretty proud) to finally offer another way to take Double Mountain with you.”

“Our sustainability mindset hasn’t changed. The best and most sustainable way to enjoy our beer is still in the pub, fresh from the tap. Refillables are still the most sustainable packaged option. And now cans join the mix when adventures call. Same values, more options.”

“We also kept the cans as clean as possible, by not using plastic shrink sleeves. All artwork is printed directly on the can to keep aluminum easy to recycle. Rinse ’em, don’t crush ’em, and send them through BottleDrop for your dime back, or bring them back to the pubs directly. Refillable bottles are still welcome at our pubs and still earn punch card credit.”

“Pak-Tech carriers are reusable but not curbside recyclable. Please return them to a designated Pak-Tech drop-off location. Double Mountain pubs are one, along with several local breweries.”

“Inside the cans you’ll find two of Double Mountain’s most popular offers, Hop Lion IPA and Dry Cider, plus a new face: our Czech-style Pilsner. It’s crisp, low-ABV, non-IPA, and built for easy drinking. No gimmicks, just good beer.”

Hop Lion
IPA
6.7% Alc/Vol | 65 BU
For the first time ever, our Flagship IPA and most recognizable beer throughout Oregon and Washington, is now in an easy open can. Tropic resin, tangerine, evergreen, and the earthy scent of Northwest petrichor leap from the nose of this proud IPA. Tangelo and fresh bread stalk closely behind, finishing with orange and dank pine.

Dry Cider
Hard Apple Cider
6.6% Alc/Vol
Our most sought after cider, made with apples grown at our very own orchard, is now in an easy open can. Newtown’s and old world cider apples from the Double Mountain Orchard are pressed and fermented on a house yeast strain. We gave it plenty of time to dry out and develop wondrous aromas of juicy pear, lychee, green fruit, and chamomile. It finishes tart, crisp, dry, and quenching.

Pilsner
Czech- Style
4.7% Alc/Vol | 37 BU
A brand new brew for us, we are excited to present our newly imagined Czech-Style Pilsner to our can lineup debut. A great low ABV and non-IPA option. No frills, no gimmicks, no fillers. Just a clean, crisp Czech-style lager to compliment whatever the day throws at you. Classic, time tested, and brewer approved.

“Same beer, same cider, way more places to enjoy them. We can’t wait to see where you take these. Cheers to new adventures in 2026! Reuse when you can, recycle always.”
