History buffs don’t need me to explain the significance of Guy Fawkes’ failed attempt to overthrow the ruling class of England back in the 17th century, and non-history buffs don’t care, so I will just talk about the beer. On November 5th every year, Guy Fawkes Day, Black Raven Brewing releases Gunpowder Plot Nitro Porter. More than a basic Porter, not that there’s anything wrong with those, this one makes use of coffee beans, bourbon, cocoa nibs and vanilla beans.

Here are the release notes from the brewery.

This annual release nitro porter celebrates the thwarting of an insidious plot attempted by Guy Fawkes & his band of anti-heroes on November 5th, 1605. Fawkes’ goal was to blow up the House of Lords with barrels of gunpowder. This year we plotted closely with Moto Brew Coffee using locally roasted Peruvian coffee beans to create a perfect roast exclusively for this beer. We soaked a portion of those pristine beans in top shelf bourbon, and combined with criminal amounts of cocoa nibs and vanilla beans. In order to unify the flavors and give it that classic British feel we conditioned it on nitrogen. So quench the conspiracy, light your fires and remember the 5th of November.
