Bale Breaker’s Five Star Dive Bar taps into a trend in the right way

Trends are rarely cooked up by a marketing department. Most of the time, trends reflect what’s actually going on in the real world—and how people are feeling right now. Sometimes a new beer just happens to land squarely in that moment. And honestly, that’s fine. Breweries exist to make the kinds of beer people want to drink (and buy). If the beer is good, there’s nothing wrong with it being a little trendy. Bale Breaker Brewing’s new year-round release, Five Star Dive Bar, fits that bill perfectly.

Five Star Dive Bar Light Beer taps into the current mood of many beer drinkers. Yes, we’ve all heard—over and over and over again—that people are drinking less alcohol these days. That doesn’t mean they’ve sworn off beer altogether. It just means they’re being a bit more intentional about when they drink and what they’re reaching for. Lower-ABV beers are a big part of that shift. And whether it’s peer pressure or new-fashioned adulting, I’ll admit it: I pay a lot more attention to ABV than I used to.

Bale Breaker Brewing describes Five Star Dive Bar as a classic light beer that clocks in at a modest 4.1% ABV and says it is “a beer that tastes like beer.” Originally introduced last year as a draft-only product, it became something of a cult classic at bars and restaurants across the company’s distribution network.

The brewery just announced that it is packaging Five Star Dive Bar in 12-packs of 12-ounce cans. Starting in late February, look for it at retail outlets and bars across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Consumers can also order it online. To celebrate, Bale Breaker is turning its Yakima taproom into a dive bar for a day. Find out more about the party here.

“It was an easy decision to move Five Star into cans, but we immediately felt that 6pks weren’t the right format for them,” says Bale Breaker co-owner Kevin Quinn. The team decided to package these in a larger format – 12pks – to reflect the easy-drinking nature of the beer – the perfect drink to enjoy while watching a game, while on a camping trip, or just as a little treat at the end of a long day.

A 12-pack for $12. Say what?

“We realized we could package a small amount this week to get them in customers’ hands for the Seahawks game this weekend,” says brewery co-owner Meghann Quinn. “So we’re launching a special one-day only SUPER sale – $12 12pks for the 12th Man!”

This deal will be available at the brewery’s Yakima taproom for just 3 hours this upcoming Sunday, Feb 8th – folks can come by and grab a 12pk from 12-3pm on 2/8 for $12. After this upcoming 3 hour sale, Five Star won’t be available again until late February.
