An African-style lager with a mission, from Watts Brewing Company

A poster for a beer release event at Watts Brewing.

Release event on Sunday, April 28th. A trans-continental collaboration beer to support a cause near and dear to the brewery owners’ hearts.

Watts Brewing will release a new collaboration beer later this month. Lowland Lager is an intercontinental collaboration beer involving Watts Brewing Company of Woodinville, Washington, and Hope for Life, an organization providing important social services in Rwanda. (Learn more about the beer below.) It is a cause with which the brewery’s owners have a personal connection. Join the brewery for a release event at the taproom in Woodinville on Sunday, April 28th.

Following the release, Watts Brewing will partner with craft-focused beer bars to host events to raise money and awareness for Hope for Life. Details are still coming together for those events. Keep an eye on Watts Brewing’s social media channels for information as it becomes available.

“Hope for Life is a non-profit in Rwanda that empowers youth to escape homelessness and reunite with families,” said Evan Watts of Watts Brewing. “Those they serve receive shelter, education, nutrition, health care, counseling, and job training.  We’re excited to brew this beer with them to raise both awareness and funding for their life-changing mission!”

“My wife, Rebecca, went to college at Seattle Pacific University with Hope for Life’s founder, Megan Chao,” explains Evan. “Becca lived in Mozambique for a couple years before we met, working as a nurse at an orphanage while Megan was starting Hope for Life in Rwanda. Becca and I have supported Hope for Life together since we met, and in 2019 she traveled to Kigali, Rwanda to see Hope for Life’s operations there.”

More than 3,000 youth actively experience homelessness daily in the city of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. Driven to the streets by poverty and abuse, they experience further trauma, hunger, illness, violence, and addiction. Hope for Life works to empower youth to escape homelessness and reunite with families in Rwanda.

About the Beer

Lowland Lager is a hybrid beer the brewery calls an African-style lager. The recipe pulls inspiration from several African brewing traditions. Most significantly, African beers are often brewed using corn and sorghum in the mash. Lowland Lager uses those ingredients to build a light, refreshing body. Watts Brewing also incorporated South African-grown hops in the whirlpool to provide a subtle earthy fruit character of pear and papaya. The beer is fermented with lager yeast but left unfiltered as an homage to an African-style beer known as “opaque beer.” Watts Brewing Lowland Lager, however, is hazy, but not opaque.

Proceeds from the event and sales of Lowland Lager will benefit Hope for Life and its efforts in Rwanda.
