A Special Collaboration Project From Georgetown Brewing and pFriem Family Brewers

Collaboration beers are not unusual. This one is. Most often, two breweries collaborate on ideas for a beer, bounce some ideas around, combine their brain power to formulate a recipe, and then get together on brew day at one of the breweries to make it happen. That’s it. This one is a bit different.

A can of The Tao of Manny beer.

More than a collaboration, this project by Georgetown Brewing and pFriem Family Brewers is a sort of experiment. If two breweries, separated by a couple hundred miles, make the exact same beer, how different, or the same, will those beers taste? I’ve always said that a good beer is more than the sum of its ingredients. It’s also about process, environment, equipment, and a certain something else that is indefinable. Cosmic juju. So, give two breweries the exact same recipe and let the universe take over.

That’s the thought behind The Tao of Manny and The Tao of Josh. The beers are named after the fellas behind each of the breweries: Georgetown Brewing’s Manny Chao and pFriem Family Brewers’ Josh pFriem. Also, the name is a reference to an ancient Chinese text, which I’ll try to put into context below.

The Tao

The Tao-Te-Ching is a book written more than 2,000 years ago. More than a piece of classic Chinese literature, it provides the foundation for Taoism, a way of life intended to restore harmony and tranquillity to a kingdom racked by widespread disorder. The Tao (the way) is the universal source and rhythm of all existence: the natural reality and fundamental law of the cosmos that all living beings should follow. Contentment, fulfillment, prosperity, happiness, peace and all the truly good things in life depend on our acceptance of the natural way. Chaos, war, misery, and suffering are the result of trying to impose our will upon it.

The Tao was a book written for its particular time, but also a book that is timeless, because the human condition does not change. Taoism asserts that a way of life, a kind of thinking, will result in the end of chaos, quarrels, and self-righteous feuding. That sounds rather appealing right now.
