Things are tough enough for craft breweries these days. A fire that shuts down the business and racks up tens of thousands of dollars in unexpected costs does not help. That’s the situation Seattle’s Rooftop Brewing is currently facing. Closed for now, assessing the damage, thankful nobody was hurt.

Earlier this week, in the overnight hours, the building that is home to Rooftop Brewing and Ladro Roastery caught fire. Seattle Fire Department officials say the fire was accidental. Reportedly, the fires started in the actual roaster itself. For Ladro Roastery, the damage is extensive. The fire took place at the back of the building. The damage is primarily confined to the interior, where Ladro stores its beans, roasts its beans, and where Rooftop Brewing stores its grains. Both businesses plan to reopen.

As far as Rooftop Brewing is concerned, the damage is mostly smoke damage to its space and the loss of grains used for brewing, though there is also some structural damage to the building that must be considered. Rooftop Brewing’s owner, Craig Christian, says it amounts to tens of thousands of dollars in losses.

“If you haven’t heard already, there was a major fire in our building last night,” Rooftop Brewing shared on social media. “The good news – everybody is safe. The bad news is that we will be temporarily closed until we sort out the damages. The fire also did some damage to our friends at Caffe Ladro roasting and we are heartbroken for them, too.”

“We love doing what we do because of the community that surrounds us. We are thinking about ways to ensure that the Rooftop spirit remains no matter what changes may come. We will keep you updated and hope you come along for the ride. Looking forward to a killer reopening and we would love for all of you to come.”

They are still assessing the damage, so they’ve set no timeline for a reopening. We will follow this story and share any updates.
