The State of IPA in 2026. Where is it, where should it go

A taster flight of beers on a bar top

I am hoping you’ll complete a quick survey about the state of IPA in 2026. You can just jump straight to the survey. When the survey period closes, I will publish the results.

But first, if you’re interested, I’ll explain why this is happening.

Communication Breakdown

Not long ago, I came across an article from Hop Notes via Substack. Basically, it is about where IPA is at right now, and where it should go next. Smart beer people talking about smart beer stuff. I found the article very interesting, so I shared it with my wife. She’s far from uninformed about craft beer and not uninterested in it; still, her immediate reaction was that the information was too geeky and deep.

This brought to mind something I’ve been thinking about lately. I worry there is a language gap between the craft beer industry and its consumers. Maybe they don’t know how to talk to us? Maybe we don’t understand what they’re saying? Beyond simply responding to what they do and do not purchase, do we ever ask them what they want?

So, to understand what people want from craft beer’s number one superstar, IPA, I put together a survey to get a glimpse into what consumers are thinking. Obviously, it will not reach everyone or provide a comprehensive picture, but it will offer some insight nonetheless. With that, I present my State of IPA 2026 survey. TAKE THE SURVEY HERE.
