Saturday at the Blues and Brews festival

There was a lot going on last weekend. Saturday, in particular, was remarkably busy. Spokane Oktoberfest, Fremont Oktoberfest, the Hops and Crops festival, and Kitsap Oktoberfest to name just a few. We opted for the inaugural Blues and Brews Festival in Des Moines. The Rotary Club of Des Moines, who organized this benefit festival, could not have dialed up better weather for a waterfront festival and Des Moines Beach Park proved to be an outstanding location for such an event.

The music was great. We witnessed two of the three acts and were amply impressed, especially by Becky Sue and her Big Rockin’ Daddies. She and her band have won too many awards over the years for me to recall. Screaming harmonica solos and waling guitar riffs served up alongside some seriously powerful female vocals belted out by an uncompromising blues diva (with the shoes to prove it). It was pretty cool. You know, if you like that sort of thing.

The beer flowed quickly. Perhaps more quickly than the organizers had anticipated. When we left, someone was rushing out to get a couple of emergency kegs just in case the situation got dire. The first brewery to run out of beer was Airways Brewing. Shortly thereafter, Two Beers Brewing went dry. No worries, beer was still flowing strong when we left. Beer was provided by Airways Brewing, Two Beers Brewing, Pike Brewing, Fish Tale Ales, and Scuttlebutt Brewing, among others.

We’re already looking forward to next year. Here are some pictures from Saturday.

Perfect weather for a beach party.

Becky Sue and her Big Rockin' Daddies.
A big, but manageable crowd.

Another crowd shot.
No significant lines for beer.

Brats and Tri-Tip Sandwiches from nearby B and E Meats. Yummy!

Becky Sue's divalicious shoes.
