Last Call for The Mayor IPA, August 8th at Imbibe Bottle House and Taproom

A poster for the last call event

This story  isn’t about fresh-hop beer, but a friend of mine once told me, “I don’t care who has the first fresh hop beer; I want to know who has the last fresh hop beer.” So, with that kind of beer-fueled FOMO in mind, I want to tell you about this year’s last chance to enjoy The Mayor IPA from Georgetown Brewing, on Thursday, October 8th at Imbibe Bottle House and Taproom in Maple Valley.

The short version: the beer was released back in August and is long gone, save for one last keg reserved for this event.

What is the Mayor IPA? It is one of Georgetown’s many philanthropic beers. Ian Furness, the Mayor of Maple Valley, inspired, spearheaded, and cheerleads this one. He’s not really the mayor of anything, but it’s a nickname the local sports radio personality earned over the years. Every summer, Furness is instrumental in organizing a golf tournament that raises funds for three very worthwhile and important organizations. At some point, Georgetown Brewing decided to do more than participate in the tournament and donate T-shirts. They stepped up to brew a beer benefiting Ian’s efforts.

The golf tournament, The Mayor of Maple Valley Open, has been around for years. When the pandemic tilted the world on its axis, the tournament was canceled. That’s when Georgetown Brewing stepped up to brew the beer: The Mayor IPA. It was initially a stopgap way to keep fundraising going, even though the tournament was temporarily stymied. Now, the beer itself is part of the annual tradition.

“Bright, golden, and unfiltered with flavors and aromas of fresh-cut oranges, pineapple, lime, and papaya from the Columbus, Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops. 100% of proceeds will be divided between these 3 organizations: Hilinski’s Hope – fighting for mental health of student athletes, Jordan Morris Foundation – supporting kids with Type 1 Diabetes, Avery Huffman Foundation – committed to finding a cure for DIPG
