Propolis Brewing celebrates its 10th anniversary this Saturday

Port Townsend’s Propolis Brewing marks the occasion with music, food, raffles, sunshine, and fun.

A decade ago, a seedling of a brewery emerged from the fertile soil of Port Townsend, Washington, and started climbing for the sun. From the beginning, it was clear that Propolis Brewing was a bit different than the rest of the crop. Dozens of other breweries opened in Washington around the same time, but this one was singular.

Robert and Piper.

Propolis Brewing started as a small-batch brewery, working out of a garage at a residential location. It focused on creating uncommon beers using unexpected ingredients, not just barley and hops. The founders, Robert Horner and Piper Corbett, started selling their herbal, botanical brews at local farmers markets, like the Ballard Farmers Market in Seattle.

The beers were well-received, to say the least, and Propolis Brewing quickly won a lot of fans. Folks were fascinated and delighted by beers like Beltane (an elderflower brett saison) and Melissa (a saison brewed with Lemon Balm). Robert and Piper’s passion for this kind of beer is what you’re tasting. In a day and age when IPA reigns supreme, this brewery remains true to its own path, dedicated to creating mixed-culture, wild, farmhouse, herbal, botanical, unexpected, uber-imaginative brews.

Like any living thing, Propolis Brewing has changed over the years, but at its core, the brewery remains what it has always been: creative, delicious, unexpected, and lovely. Today that little seedling of a brewery has blossomed into a big, beautiful brewery, creating beers with the same imagination and whimsy but on a larger scale. The taproom at the brewery matches both the ethos and the beer: it is a comfortable and eclectic community hub, serving amazing beers.
