Big Al goes back to school

Alejandro Brown —the Al behind Big Al Brewing— has done a lot of things right since opening the brewery bearing his name. Most importantly, he’s made great beer. We just learned that Big Al himself will be teaching a class this summer through South Seattle Community College’s continuing education program: Craft Beer – What’s Behind the Great Taste. Al will teach eager (and presumably thirsty) students about the ingredients and the process behind great beer. The class takes place on a Saturday morning, July 10th, from 9:00 – 12:30.

Below is the official description of the class Big Al is going to be leading. Click here to learn more and to register.

Spend a morning with the head brewer of Big Al Brewing and learn the ins and outs of making delicious tasting beer.  Talk about the process, choosing the ingredients and the different styles for crafting beer.  After an overview, tour the facility and then have an opportunity to sample a variety of beers. You can see how the different ingredients and styles of making beer influence the taste and flavor.  Big Al Brewery is a production brewery located in White Center that produces specialty brews every season in addition to their flagship ales Irish Red and Big Al Pale Ale.  Lunch will be provided along with the tasting.

Coincidentally, on July 10th, Big Al Brewing will also be the site of a charity benefit party featuring live music from Four on the Floor – a classic rock cover band that just so happens to be fronted by me. Yes, this is your opportunity to drink great beer and rock out as we raise money for breast cancer research. We’ll have more details about the event as the date nears.

  1. I wonder if this class will be geared more towards the person who’s brand new to brewing, or if experienced homebrewers would get anything out of it.

  3. Thanks for posting this Washington Beer Blog!

John, since I only have 3 1/2 hours to work with it will be very general and aimed at people interested in learning more about beer and how it’s brewed/developed. I think most experienced homebrewers are beyond the bulk of the class, honestly. Still going to be a great morning all about beer!!
