Beer Church IPA raises over $12,000 for the CCFA

UPDATE January 5, 2017 – – We now have some totals. The 2016 batch of Beer Church IPA earned over $12,000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). This, in largest part, because of the participation of Georgetown Brewing and the other breweries that collaborated on the beer (Airways Brewing, Big Al Brewing, and Two Beers Brewing). Also, big thanks to all the bars and pubs that sold the beer and also contributed – they are listed below in the original post. And finally, someone had to drink all that beer, so thank you to all the beer lovers out there who supported the cause one pint at a time.

In case you didn’t get to try it, all we can tell you now that it’s gone is that you missed a good one. The 2016 version of Beer Church IPA was surprisingly light-drinking, extremely hop-forward and flavorful, and generally delicious, in a tropical, juicy, fruity way. This was in large part because of the hops donated by YCH Hops of Yakima, so big thanks to them as well.

Beer Church is the philanthropic arm of the Washington Beer Blog. I started Beer Church in 1997, which means it predates this blog by 11 years. To date, Beer Church has raised nearly $150,000 for a variety of charitable causes. How? By finding fun and easy ways for beer lovers to contribute to worthwhile causes.

This Saturday, November 12th we release the 2016 version of Beer Church IPA. The beer was brewed at Georgetown Brewing Company in collaboration with Airways Brewing, Big Al Brewing, and Two Beers Brewing. Join us at Beer Church Turkey Bowl for the official release.

Ingredients for the beer were kindly donated by Great Western Malting Company of Vancouver, Washington and YCH Hops of Yakima, Washington. Georgetown Brewing donated their time, facilities and resources and the other participating breweries donated their expertise, collaborating on the recipe and participating on brew day.

This is just another example of the generosity of the local beer and brewing industry. The breweries were happy and excited to support the effort, but beyond that, without the support of YCH Hops and Great Western Malting, none of this would be possible. Their contributions are, literally, the backbone of the beer. Their involvement plays a key role in the fundraising component of the project.

The beer will be released at the 18th Annual Beer Church Turkey Bowl this Saturday evening at West Seattle Bowl. The event is sold out but the public is welcome to attend, enjoy the beer, and participate in the silent auction and raffle. Several local breweries and bars will compete for the coveted Beer Church trophy.

About the Beer

Beer Church IPA uses three different hop varieties to create its unabashedly hop-forward character. Along with Ekuanot™ hops, the recipe includes two newly developed, experimental hop varieties that have yet to be named (currently designated as HBC 344 and HBC 522). We were very honored to once again get to brew with new hop varieties that have yet to reach the general hop market but were bred specifically to provide the kind of citrusy, piney, dank, fruity and floral character that beer lovers crave these days. In  2013 we brewed our Beer Church Ale with HBC 366, which has since earned a name the Ekuanot and become a popular, regularly available hop variety.

All of the beer’s hop flavors are supported and balanced by the use of 2-Row Malted Barley and White Wheat Malt. Beer Church IPA clocks in at 6.3 percent Alcohol by Volume (ABV) with the hops providing pine-citrus, tropical and herbal flavors. It is a bright golden beer with a dry body and light mouthfeel.

Adding hops. Lots and lots of late-addition hops.

For the past six years we have organized and promoted the Beer Church Ale project. Over the years, a number of different local breweries have brewed different versions of Beer Church Ale. Proceeds from the sale of the beer are donated to the charitable cause of our choice. Since 2011 we have donated proceeds to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, which this year will once again benefit from every sip of the beer you take.

  1. Doesn’t seem likely any of it will make its way out of King Co. Maybe next year we will have to make more.
