Are These Seattle’s Best Beer Bars?

One logically assumes that a magazine named Draft is about beer. That assumption would be correct. Draft Magazine is about beer. Uh, right? In the Jan./Feb. issue, Draft Magazine published a list of “Best Bars.” Now, in the March issue, they started to break down the list city by city. Here is what they discovered when they came looking, presumably, for Seattle’s best beer bars.

Draft Magazine’s list of Seattle’s best bars:

Brouwer’s Café
King’s Hardware
Tractor Tavern
Über Tavern
Vessel
Zayda Buddy’s Pizza & Bar

I could rant on and on, but I won’t. It’s not really worth ranting. It’s kind of sad, actually. It’s like listening to someone babble on and on about the San Francisco Giants and the New York Rangers being the best football teams in the NBA. You wonder if there is any value in correcting them.

Us folks here in Seattle know the good beer bars and we don’t need anyone from Phoenix telling us about the Seattle beer scene. I don’t necessarily mean to disparage Draft Magazine. It’s a fine magazine in many regards and I don’t think I’ve ever had a complaint before. I’m just suggesting that they missed the point this time. Strangely, it was their own point to begin with.

  1. Agreed…

I was amazed after reading that list the other day and was going to do a post, but just figured there’s no point. Would love to know who came up with those though, and ask them what the hell they were thinking?

If they wanted to call those bars their “favortie seatte bars”, then fine. But, to include some of those bars in a list of “seattle’s best BEER bars”….well, that’s just ridiculous and idiotic.

Like you said, we all know better:-)

  3. What would you list as some of Seattle’s best beer bars? I’m still new to the area and am on the lookout for some good places to knock back a few.

  5. Pretty much my sympathies on this post. I really dislike the term “favorite” or “top” as this eludes to what the majority favors and therefore you should. Instead why not organize the list by neighborhood or overall age, or … Well you can see where this would lead. In the end I think the list is a good start, but unless someone from DRAFT wants to come over here and visit each bar and use the same criteria I might endorse it.

Cheers and thanks (for saving me the effort)

  7. Uber
    Brouwer’s
    Naked City
    Collins
    Beveridge Place
    Barking Dog
    Latona
    Fiddlers Inn
    Hopvine

The list goes on, if anyone else wants to chime in.

  9. the fact that I haven’t been to Fiddler’s is a serious crime. got to Naked City last weekend and loved it.

    This list is a joke.

Now we need more of these places to serve imperial pints.

  11. Wow – this hurts my brain just trying to figure out what criteria they used to come up with this list.

On the good side, there are more comments on here, then on the original article at Draft Magazine.

  13. I think that alot of us who wish to flex out literary muscles should make it a point of visiting many of these “bars” in Seattle and write up about it. I know for me my current ‘bet’ for a “artisan” beer bar is … well as you can tell I have a hard time choosing.

I find myself lately visiting Naked and Collins pretty frequently. So maybe that is my favorite, who knows. I would say I like Beveridge for its dog friendliness but I love Naked for its attention to vedge menus. Who the he!! knows.

Cheers and thanks again for posting this point.

  15. The Seattle information page at the Beer Mapping Project lists the 10 top breweries, brewpubs, beer bars, beer stores, etc., compiled from independent reviews:

P.S.: Wanted to say great post!

  17. i noticed that its a very ballard-centric list, and as a ballardite i don’t think we are really the hotbed of the seattle beer scene.

i think what happened was the writer came out to seattle to visit a friend, and said ‘hey let’s go visit some beer bars’.

friend said ‘fuck that let’s go see a show at the tractor. we’ll get food at kings before and stop by zayda buddy’s afterwards.’

writer replies ‘uh OK i’ll make it work out somehow. i don’t like beer all that much anyways’.

  18. No way you can talk beer bars without having Brouwer’s on the list. As the beermapping project does not have Brouwer’s, I have no choice but think that it is crap.

    My Favorites:
    Brouwer’s
    Uber
    Stumbling Monk
Smith …or anything that Linda is involved in
Die Bierstube … or any of the German beauties by Chris…

I cant see Hopvine making the list… though its not bad.

Need to check out Latona, Fiddlers, Dog and Pony, Naked, and Collins.

  19. I like the Tractor, saw the Meat Purveyors there, but they serve all their beer in plastic cups. That is a total downer for me. I’d much prefer a bottle or a glass.

I’m not even from Seattle and I know enough not to go to the Tractor to enjoy a beer. I’m mostly familiar with the places near the football stadium as that is one of my main reasons to go to Seattle besides concerts.

I’ll have to help them fix Vancouver… We have good beer and pubs like Leffe or Irish Heather or even Yale Town Brewing…

I might have to make some local submissions…
