Cold Cutter IPA, brewed for an iconic Seattle beer destination

Bale Breaker Brewing releases Cold Cutter West Coast IPA — brewed with, and available at, West Seattle’s Super Deli Mart

It’s not the first time Super Deli Mart has collaborated with a local brewery to create a beer, but the one they recently brewed with Bale Breaker Brewing tells a story.

Sure, there are other convenience stores around Seattle that have morphed into craft beer destinations, but Super Deli Mart was the original. A decade ago it was the subject of a story in The Atlantic. Apparently, that esteemed East Coast publication thought it was unexpected, anomalous, and hip. As the author said, “a post-modern Elks Club.”

It’s a family-operated business at SDM. Photo from Instagram.

In my opinion, one of the things setting Super Deli Mart apart is that it still embraces its previous, not-so-beery past, as evidenced by the name of this new beer, Cold Cutter IPA. Once upon a time, Super Deli Mart was a Hoagy’s Corner store. For those who didn’t grow up around the Puget Sound area, or are too young to remember, Hoagy’s Corner was a local chain of convenience stores that also featured fresh, made-to-order deli sandwiches. There were 18 locations scattered across the Seattle-Tacoma area.

Decades ago, the 18 stores in the Hoagy’s Corner chain were sold, mostly to Southland Corporation, which transformed nearly all of the locations into 7-Eleven stores, but not Super Deli Mart. It eventually evolved into something very much better than that. Today, it’s a different kind of deli, a different kind of bottleshop, a different kind of beer bar. If not unique, it is singular.

The sandwich of choice for most Hoagy’s Corner fans was the Cheesy British. You can still get a Cheesy Brit, and many other great sandwiches like it, at Super Deli Mart. And of course, you can get any of a number of fantastic beers on tap, or to-go, while you’re at it.

About Cold Cutter IPA

At this point in the story, you shouldn’t need me to explain the name of the beer Bale Breaker Brewing created for, and with, Super Deli Mart. It is available now, in cans, at Super Deli Mart. Bale Breaker will release the beer at its taproom in Moxee, Washington on Wednesday, May 19.

Owned and operated by an exceedingly nice family, with a beer program managed by a ferociously dedicated beer enthusiast, Super Deli Mart deserves all the accolades I can give it. Now Bale Breaker Brewing has given it a beer. And it’s really good. No surprise there, eh?

Stop by Super Deli Mart some time soon and pick up some of the Cold Cutter IPA. While you’re at it, treat yourself to a cheesy brit.

Here’s what Super Deli Mart said about Cold Cutter IPA on social media:

Several weeks ago we had the awesome opportunity to visit our good friends at @balebreaker Brewing Company in Moxee, WA. In the heart of hop country Yakima, we were super stoked to brew up a special collab to pair with our cold cut sandwiches for the upcoming spring season.

We are now very excited to present to you ‘Cold Cutter’, our modern take on the iconic West Coast IPA style clocking in at 6.7% ABV & 55 IBU’s. Cold Cutter was brewed using 100% WA ingredients including @balebreaker‘s own homegrown malts and dry hopped extensively with a blend of Mosaic Cryo, Citra Cryo, Simcoe & Idaho7 T90 pellets. Expect classic notes of citrus, pine, herbal and spicy hop aromas accompanied by a smooth, crisp finish.

This exclusive IPA is #freshoffthefarm from Yakima and available to you now at the Deli in limited draft and 16oz cans to go. Don’t forget to pair it with our classic Cheesy British or traditional Reuben, this combo was meant to be folks!

For our friends in Yakima, expect @balebreaker to release the collab on Wednesday, May 19th. We hope everyone enjoys this beer as much as we do! Sometimes you just need a break from the haze and sip on a nice, crispy West Coast
